Best Way of Getting Rid of a Knackered Jag?

I have a 2005 Jaguar S Type Sport V6 which I brought back with me to Ireland when I moved home from London. I started getting gearbox fault error messages a while back and took it to a respected automatic transmission repair guy who looked at it and reckoned it would be the best part of €4k parts and labour to get it repaired. On that basis he correctly reckoned it wasn't worth reparing and suggested I might be able to sell it off for parts.

At the moment I'm still able to use the car for short trips but I'm under no illusions that I either have to get the work done or the car is finished and I'm with the repair guy that at that cost its just not worth reparing. Now I have to be honest I'm not sure about how you go about flogging a car off for parts but do people reckon that going down that route is the best way to get any value back from a car that's effectively knackered or would there be any better/easier disposal alternatives?

    eBay Auction.

Specify the issues and advise it needs to be taken away on a trailer.

    Otherwise a scrappy.

Thanks for that Keith - I hadn't though of Ebay. Should have done really seeing as my wife bought her last car off Ebay. Cheers!

If you have time on your hands and space. The best way to get full value and good money from it would be to strip it yourself and flog the lot. It will take time but thats where the money would be.

Thanks Listermint - on the time and space issue I'm living in a terraced house with no garage and generally away from home from 6.30am to 8.00pm so lacking on both of those. But to be honest even if I had the time and the space I reckon if I tried to strip it myself I'd only end up doing more damage to what's left working. I'm not what you'd describe as mechanically gifted.

Just lash it on donedeal with an honest description, parting it out yourself seems unfeasible.

Would a second hand gearbox solve the problem? That's got to come in well under the 4k. It's worth trying a few scrappys and looking at prices on eBay. The same guy can probably do the work and he may be able to locate a gearbox as well.

    Auction it

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Put it in donedeal for €1,500 and it will be gone by tomorrow :)

Surely a 2005 s type is still worth enough to make a gearbox repair worthwhile. Im not suggesting paying 4k but a used box plus labour is surely less than that.

Thanks for all the advice everyone - on the replacement gearbox issue the transmissions guy who looked at it said he'd keep an eye out for a second hand unit but he said that because the parts for the different Jaguar S types (years and models) are so specific that there doesn't tend to be a huge amount of useable second hand units knocking around for each different model. That said it might be worth having a browse around the spare parts sites to see if there's one available.

I have a feeling he would find a suitable replacement if you handed him the car for scrap money.

I know what you mean but in this instance I don't think so as he wasn't suggesting I sell the car to him for scrap. This guy is a well known specialist in Dublin on automatic transmissions, he took my car for a few hours, ran diagnosis on it, took it out for a run himself and didn't charge me anything.

Actually I've just been on the phone to him asking how much he'd charge to fit a UK sourced gear box and he was warning me to be wary of going down that route as some of them will flog you parts that aren't exact matches or already a bit ropey which you won't know until you've had it fitted - and then its your cost to get it out and get it back to them. Also suggested I check with a reputable Irish based Jag specialist first (who I've heard of) as he thinks he might have the part.

Fair enough and his advice about fitting an unknown box is not wrong but sometimes you have to go for it and hope that buying from a reputible source etc might reduce the risks. He does still appear to be pushing the idea of it being difficult to get the right part. I dont buy this really. Im thinking a specialist breaker would source one in a short time.

If you supply the vin no of your car to the parts supplier this would assist in supplying the exact gearbox for that year and model. Please also view Jaguar Enthusiats Club website, a lot of contact names breakers etc.

As mickdw suggested, the advice that you were given re: fitting a box from the UK isn't wrong. However, you must get a guarantee from the supplier that if it's the wrong box for that car (wrong month within the year can cause issues etc) or for some reason the box doesn't work correctly, you must get a full refund. This happened me with a Passat a few years back.
I bought the second hand box from a breaker using "the Parts gateway" network in the UK.
The chassis number was correct. (I think I was asked for the engine code also) However when the box was fitted, the speedo wouldn't work and the fuel gauge wouldn't work either. It was a slightly later box than my original one.
I did get a full refund but I was down the cost of shipping the box back to the UK and the original cost of shipping. Not to mention the cost of labor.
Anyway, when I did source a box and got it fitted, my car was back on the road for half the price I was originally quoted from VW for a new one - something similar to your predicament.
Don't let this story put you off, I was unlucky with my first choice and was indeed caught for the excess cost, but, it still worked out OK.
If you deal with the correct Jag specialist who really knows what they are doing, I doubt they will get it wrong.
I was dealing with a breakers yard through a parts online network.
I'm sure if I was dealing with the correct VW specialist that knew what they are looking at, I would have gotten the correct part right first time.
Tread carefully, but put a second hand box into the car. Get it back on the road. There is a risk involved, but it is worth it IMO.

The link that I quoted is for Jaguar Specialists so they know their stuff when it comes to Jaguar. They will also give some sort of guarantee (3 Months I think).. I know a few people that have dealt with them and had a problem and it was sorted out ..
