National Identity Cards on the way

    Hi Folks,

My friends are going mental at the idea of the new driving licence having information other than penalty points and licence categories.

They seem to think that this is a prelude to National Identity Cards. But an issue arrises when I ask them, 'whats wrong with ID cards?'

They only know that they do not like them, not why.

They liken it to removing freedom of speech. It then really kicks off, when I say that there is no such thing as freedom of speech, only freedom to be held responsible for your speech.. but thats another tread!

    My question to ye,

    1. do ye think the new driver licences are a covert prelude to ID cards?
    2. would you have an issue with carrying an id card? If so, why?

    Cheers,
    S

What information is going to be contained on it?

What are the realistic consequences of having that information on a driving license?

I personally don't like the idea of state Id unless its to claim benefits , but we re a very open society these days so it is becoming a necessary evil

They have already collected ID photos from people signing on the dole for an ID card with picture, i presume to prevent fraud being done in return,in the form of having friends collect each others doles and working while collecting etc.

Personally i dont mind a national ID card, but i will probably refuse to carry it.
I never carry ID because nobody needs to know who i am unless i break the law, which i never do.

Hopefully they wont enforce some law making carrying ID mandatory.
Im probably too stuborn to carry it and will end up harrassed with refusing to cooperate every time they ask who i am.
I dont use a car either due to issues where you will be harrassed if you dont carry ID.
Thats easy to avoid, i just dont drive, not so easy though if they are out on the streets stopping people randomly and using legislation with the percieved power of law to force you to identify yourself, aka represent your person.

Next thing they will be knocking on your door to find out how many people live in your house and what they do for jobs.
Oh wait, they already do that :p

    1. I don’t know if the new driver licence is a covert prelude to ID cards but I would not be surprised if it was. Most of the people, past and present who run / ruin this country are cheats and liars and I would not trust any of them to tell the truth about anything.

    2. Yes, I certainly would have an issue with being compelled to carry an I.D. card to satisfy the wishes of some arsehole politicians. Of course, they will not do it honestly anyway. It will be ‘suggested’ that you carry ID in order to make things easier when dealing with a whole range of official bodies, i.e. avoid being hassled or victimised.

Didn’t the Gestapo have something like this during the last war? They got people they didn’t like to paint a yellow cross on their foreheads and tattooed a number on their arms as well. Come to think about it, didn’t one of the mobs in government have close ties with the Nazi party? I suppose we will be doing whatever the Taoiseach Angela Merkel demands.

I have no problem with National ID cards.

I do have a problem if people are forced to have one and carry one at all times.

    1. no
    2. no

there should absolutely be a national ID card which means no longer having to bring your passport everywhere but I don't see the Irish state being able to manage it from licences.

the only information that is to be held on the chip on the driving license cards is the information that is visable on the card.
nothing extra will be held on the card that includes the amount of penalty points.

this may change in the future.

whatever info is on them cards should be - available in full to whoever owns the card there should be card readers made available to the public unless they the state intend to store covert info on them....

Just for curiousity sake, what would you consider covert info and what would you envision the Irish government doing with that information?
