Hi, am thinking of going to Kerala for 3 weeks on my own later in the year- how safe is it for a female backpacking? or any tips in general. Thanks

I've never been to Kerala but I've done about 6 solo trips to India. Perfectly safe if you keep your wits about you, no getting drunk and wandering at night. Dress modestly, maybe even wear traditional Indian clothes.

Have been to India many times and Kerala twice and have met many solo women travellers, most had good things to say but a few we're creeped out by the Indian men... Remember there not as open as the western countries are to women wearing beach wear walking around the streets, you'll be grand as long as you keep your wits about you and dress appropriate.... If eating street food only eat we're its busy!! The food people beaches and life is fantastic over there once you get over the shock of poverty!! Try and get up as early as possible and go to the markets and fish market on the beach, oh and bring something for the Delhi belly I never got it put partner gets it every time we go to India, have a great trip it's well worth it..

The worst I have seen are weirdos **** off at the beach where western women were oblivious to them. A lot of Indians think that western women live their lives like Samantha in Sex and the City.

The Keralan countryside is fantastic and I've never felt unsafe there at all. I would stick to wearing long trousers and a tunic (short kurta). If you dress well you are respected.

If it's your first time to India have a google for this book.

Get to see a kathakali show. Go and see the a spice garden. The hill stations where tea is grown are amazing. There's so much to see!
