    hi,

i live in an apt in royal canal park in ashtown, dublin 15. i have sky installed by satellite dish which is on the balcony, the dish itself is not sticking out over the balcony, its actually attached to the wall. KBO have won some exclusive contract with royal canal pk to supply sky. they have sent letters saying that we must switch to single central satellite dish presumably it is installed on one of the apt roofs and sky will be wired into apt through existing lines. the switch over costs 50€ and if we fail to remove dish and the switch over they'll remove dish and charge us for the courtesy around 120€. i have some questions if anyone can help on any of them?

    1. can they enter my balcony without my permission and remove dish, they would physically have to get onto the balcony to remove it!
    2. when sky launch broadband this year, will i still be able to get it?
    3. sky regularly call up and offer certain deals like free hd channels if we get movies. they contacted me and gave me sports for half price. clearly i wont be able to avail of these offers if im not a direct customer.

i feel this is unfair and cant see why in rcp we cant just have an option for or own tv provider. if anyone is aware of the development, they will no the problem about the problems <snip>.

btw upc is not available in rcp.

    thanks

Keep your dish, from the sounds of it,nobody else can see it.Put a few well placed plants around it to hide it.
Take up whatever offer you want from Sky-even if you are forced to use KBO,the offer is applied to your account. The dish KBO installed is only to provide the signal to yours & others Sky boxes.

Sky broadband will be provided via phoneline which uses Eircom's infrastructure & will have nothing to do with KBO.

Even if you own your apartment you don't own your balcony, you only lease it. The management company is entitled to remove the satellite dish from your balcony if it is against house rules to have one.

One is allowed under EU Law to own a satellite dish. There is a thread here about it on Boards.

The problem there is that you can have a dish if no alternative is available.KBO will be offering a service but as I said before,if the dish isn't publicly visible then the op should keep using it.

I would tell them where to go. Forcing a service more like it. Bloody capitalists. :D

KBO installed SKY service in our development Prospect Hill, Dublin 11.

At the time I was in the same position as yourself, had my own dish installed on the balcony in a very neat & tidy way. I rang up KBO explaining this and stated that, as I had already paid for a Sky installation they should do their own installation free of charge.

They agreed to this without any dispute. Only difference is where your main Sky box is located they install a small white box that they run the signal through for your Sky box. Very neat & tidy job plus I've gotten the full use of my balcony back.

If they cable each apartment with two cables from Astra that you could put any satellite box on then happy days.

If you have to pay them or if they insist on a SKY subscription then not so good.

There was a thread on monopolies on TV distribution systems in appartments and the dead line has passed for something or other.

An alternative is to bolt the dish to a paving slab. Since it could be moved it may not be a fitting or fixture.
