Pubs increase prices after 1am?

A mate has posted on his FB wall 2 receipts for the same set of drinks, one before and one after 1am and the price for the drinks after 1am was €1.45 more expensive than the previous order.

    Is this a common practice?

Some pubs do this to cover the cost of live music rather than charging customers at the door.

Seen tills change prices before depending on what time of the night it is a a bar.
I think a lot of us have.
It used to be common practise in a number of pubs in my own home town and in others in England where I frequented.

Late licenses and door staff cost money, bars increase prices to reflect the rise in expense of them staying open, makes sense to me.

Fair enough, never noticed this before. Just thought it was strange, as you do have to pay into the place as well.

Ya thats really common... I bought a vodka before in one pub and it was 4.20 and then a little after twelve it went up to 5 euro! I guess if they have extra costs they need to get it from somewhere???

    Not all places do it.
    Some do.
    Some don't.
I wouldn't go to one that increases the prices TBH.

Well that puts a different gloss on it.

Being charged twice for the same thing is wrong.

    Where is this place?

A lot of place increase their charges after mid night. Including abrakebabra and many many bars!

Which is fair enough if they don't charge you to get in the door as well.

its pretty standard practice in Dublin. i noticed it in a couple of places in kilkenny too. i could be wrong but i think if a pub/club displays a sign informing the customers of the price change they are within their rights to do so. as a previous poster mentioned, abrakebabra. they apply a 10 per cent surcharge after 12

Unless they abolish the late licence and stop ripping off publicans with rates and leases, it will always be like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭messrs

think its fairly common practice. some 24 hour shops also put their prices up after midnite also

Yeah loads of places do it-pubs and clubs that do aren't doing much to entice people to drink in pubs instead of buying stuff in Tesco and staying in.

Far too much of a price discrepancy between supermarkets and pubs.

Some places go up every friggen hour!

Just drink during the daytime instead, like I do.
People and TV are way more interesting too.

yea they are the worst, the one increase does not bother me much but not knowing every time you go for a pint is crazy

Not surprised really. But if they advertised the fact there would be a mad rush to stock up before the time limit kicked in.

Once they display there prices there is nothing wrong. Pubs are sneaky like that.

Seen as your mate sounds like a load of fun, he should stay near the price list next time and make sure they change them at 1am.

You'd think so but a place I used to work in did it. Got a licence to do a late bar on Thursdays, got live band and dj every week, advertised and had notice about price increase after 11:30. Never noticed a mad rush for ordering drinks just before the change over. Only ever 1 or 2 complaints about it as well to which we would try explain why and just send them towards the giant poster on the wall.

Stock-market type bars are great craic though, they change the prices randomly depending on what is selling well and have all the ups and downs on screens. Can't do them here though because of licensing laws unfortunately.

Pub near me in college used to do a vodka and dash for £1.20 up till 11pm, when up to about £3 after 11pm. Mad rush to the bar from 10.45pm onwards.

It's not foremost on people's minds I guess when out for a good time.

    Same in my house.

After 12 if my wife wants a glass of wine and i have to go to the fridge to get it...that's an extra euro out of her housekeeping for the week.

I don't imagine it is. The price increase was used to cover the cost of the entertainment and no charge was placed on admission. It was advertised as well which I didn't think the boss would have done. A big giant poster with the upcoming bands and a notice about the late bar with what time it was closing at and in the same line it said about price increases after 11:30.

He also re-did the price list that was beside the entrance doors with the prices of everything and what they would be after 11:30. He never took them down for the rest of the week either. Just did one list and left it up. As he said, why hide it. Someone's gonna notice it and you may as well provide the answer to the question they'll be thinking.

seeing as not all bar/clubs do it, we can infere that those bars/clubs that do it are motivated by greed and not necessity.
on more than one occasion i have left establishments for this reason.

Some bars/clubs do door charges or make you check in your coat and pay for it. Different places use different methods to try to meet the extra costs of staying open late.

    Hah that sounds really interesting/fun!

(Buying up a shed load of beer 'X' on the cheap and undercutting the bar when demand sky rockets! :pac: )

    EDIT: then getting turfed out!

is there any law saying that pub price displays must be visible ??

Only ones I have seen are on the back of the door & only seen when you are leaving which is still legal. They have fuf-all drinks on them at that.

Stout / Lager / Cider / Spirit never any brand names or mixed drinks

they have to have a price list displayed on the premises not sure if it has to be located at the entrance, i have seen them at the door and near the bar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭nice_very

I am pretty sure that most bars that raise prices after a certain time, will have the higher prices displayed on their price list (which should be legally displayed) if anybody wants to check this and report back..

Yup, getting your round in turns into serious tactical thinking. You also end up drinking all sorts of stupid **** later in the night because people just get whatever is cheapest while they're at the bar, so you end up playing a weird form of drunken russian roulette. Shots of zambuca with red wine chasers just feels weird.

I was in the Q bar on O'Connell Bridge a few years ago and they increased prices every hour after midnight by one Euro. Unsurprisingly I have never been back.

and some bars/clubs dont charge in, dont increase prices at 11.30 and dont over charge for drink, granted these are few and far between but they are the establishments i try to frequent.
