New Car Choices - Sportage, Golf, V40

We have decided to trade our 05 Disco 3 for an economical motor - Disco avg's 26MPG and cost over €2k in services last year plus tax is €1300 a year.

I do 100kms a day comute and the odd trip to Dublin from Cork, but this might be more common this year.

We have test driven a Kia Sportage 1.7 2WD and found it to be a very well equipped car with lots of toys. We both like the look of the vehicle and the kids think its really cool. We were planning on ordering one next week.

I have therefore spent the weekend looking at alternatives and after doing a lot of research, the new Golf (1.6 TD) and the Volvo V40 D2 are two cars I think might be worth considering.

I know that the Kia is a Crossover and the other two are hatchbacks but I was wondering what people think - to be honest I am probably going to order the Kia but I would like some alternative viewpoints.

My dad was looking at a Sportage a few months back and bought an i40 Tourer instead. In the executive trim it's a nice place to be

Volkswagen and Volvo are in a different league to a Kia altogether.

Yes, the Kia is much bigger and has a way better warranty.

true but almost any kia is better than a golf no matter which way you tart it.

one of the worlds most over rated cars ever.

personally Id go with the v40

V40 for me also. Though all three are nice places to be. If kids are going to be in the car alot the Kia might shade it.

There is also a V40 cross country now as well if you fancy something that isn't quite a hatch and isn't quite an SUV.

Personally, I'd try and stretch the budget for the 2.0tdi Golf or D3 V40. On your sort of journeys the consumption will be very similar, if not better on the bigger engines, and they will be a lot nicer to drive.

New Mk7 Golf is light years better than a Kia. Sister in law has new Sportage and it has thin paint, uneven panel gaps and in interior that feels as well made as a cheap stereo.Got a look at new VW at a do in a dealership. Its a class act.Have you seen a Mk7?

Budget is MAX €30k so that is why the list was these 3 cars. I have driven the Kia and it seems to be a very well built car. Don't really care about the badge its the 7 year warranty and all the positive reviews I have read that got me looking at it in the first place.
I do think I'll go and have a look at the Golf and V40 tomorrow.

€31,395 for entry level Diesel - more like €35 when spec'd like the Sportage

plus I think that is an exceptionally ugly vehicle.
