Yes there is a few hours added between the 3 movies , you should watch them the next time, if you enjoyed the storyline/world its set in , it just expands on it really and adds to the lore and ties off some loose ends etc.

Consider reading the books. They're a bit turgid at times but they're worth it in the end.
Also read The Hobbit first - you'll be able to annoy people with spoilers before the next two flicks come out.:)

I gotta say,I watched the films and then read the book with LOTR, and that worked really well for me. I'll be waiting until I've seen the 3 films before reading The Hobbit.

That battle at Helms Deep was the high point for me aswell.
Used to piss me off no end when it would cut away from the battle to those stupid talking trees.

I thought the films were great, especially the first one, rewatched them over xmas and kind of envied those who were new to them

I would be particularly envious of those who hadn't read the books and just were completely new to the thing and had no idea what was going to happen

The Hobbit is a much easier read than LOTR. My 12 year old daughter read it, and loved it!

Watch the extended version... much better. Once you see it watch the normal ones again, so much is left out.

When I saw FOTR in the cinema it blew my mind, still my greatest cinema experience of all time. Never seen anything like it before.

What do you mean by turgid?

I would assume he means inflated with extra content such as a bit too much lore and backstory. Great reads nonetheless.

Yeah, it takes time to get off the ground. Apparently it needed a heavy edit before it made the shelves. Tolkien put a lot of material in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales that would have been in the LOTR books otherwise.

Hmm.. I tried to watch these when they came out on Sky (was no avoiding it as they were all over the movie channels) but it just didn't do it for me - kept getting bored and switching off in the first one around the time they meet Agent Elf :p

Saw bits of the 2nd over Xmas though and it seemed a bit better even though I'm not into all that wizards and magic stuff normally.

Worth getting the extended versions and trying again?

They are must see movies but if you cannot get through the non extended ones I think you should try the non extended ones.

The extended versions add lots of lore and adds about 45 minutes per movie.

The first movie is slower than the second two as it gets allot of the story out of the way and introduces most of the characters in the movies. They do get more exciting starting with the second one however saying that the first one is a fantastic movie also but you need to engross yourself with it. Don't turn it on and only half pay attention to it.

Must watch movies to be very honest.

Enjoyed the first one at its Premier in the Savoy in 2001 as it was bit of an occasion with dinner afterwards and had loved the books as a kid (read them all when I was 14 or so), fell asleep half way during the second one in cinema, gave the third one a miss, 2 hours or so in total is more then enough of LOTR for me, soon tired of the repetitive battles and corny, po faced dialogue. Rather watch 10 episodes back to back of Mrs Browns Boys than watch the Hobbit at this stage :)

Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but had to post something.

Have watched the LOTR films umpteen times over the years including the extended versions, or so i thought.

Downloaded the final, directors, full fat, extended version. Holy crap. It fills in so many blanks and answers a lot of what i thought we plot holes. Some silly others important. Each film is about 4.5 hours long (average).

Aragorn's age for one. This was a big thing for me and made worse by the ending of the Hobbit (3rd film). His age simply did not match up to the timeline.
How they found, and got onto the pirate ships.
The Gandalf & Saruman scene at the start of ROTK.

Plus loads of extra that really explain and improve the story line over all three films.

Thoroughly enjoyed them. Like watching new films all over again.

Are these readily available? Would definitely love to see it. Haven't watched the movies in a few years, have only seen the extended editions from the DVDs where you had to change discs etc and it kinda takes away from the flow of things!

Well there's my next few nights viewing sorted. Where did you locate them?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,697 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

I bought the LOTR DVDs when they came out. Then as all good fools do i bought the extended versions when they came out. Thing is i've watched the ones i downloaded and little of what i've just watched were in the extended version i bought. I know everyone forgets some parts, but not whole sections of a film.

It's why it surprised me about how much i'd missed and how it explained so much.

I'm not much into streaming/downloading (so excuse the terminology) but with my service provider torrent sites are out of the question as they usually block all access to them. However i found them on <snip>. It's a hosting site or some such thing.

Was having a lazy day and was not in form for routing out the DVDs so said i'd download them. In the list of downloads were "Directors/Extended" cut. So i downloaded them. When downloaded i saw they ran for over 4 hours (one was 4.5 hours) so stuck o a truck load of popcorn, drew the blinds and boarded up the door for the day.

All the scenes you mentioned are in the extended edition dvds I'm pretty sure.

Some great scenes, but interspersed with too many slow scenes, and running over loads of mountains is a bit ridic

Really. Either i don't remember, which is odd as the scenes were like a "new film" to me or i got shafted and bought the not so extended versions.

Either way it's an excuse to watch them again.

Have to admit, new scenes or not, some are really just too much. In fact i'm surprised they left some of that stuff in and cut what they did.

Was it the 4 disc dvd sets you watched? Those scenes are definitely in those as i haven't watched any other versions of the films bar the theatrical cuts.

I'm due a re-watch myself too, been too long :)

Don't know now. Starting to doubt myself.

I remember the first film and the scene in the woods where they are given their respective gifts. In the "regular" film that scene is missing.

However it's the second and thrid film that is brand new to me. So either i only have the extended first film or only watched it.

Thanks, now i have to go route through nearly 1,000 dvds to find it. :D
