Ok so this is a long question!:
I want to study fashion in college (I'm doing transition year at the moment) and I'm looking into colleges... i am leaning towards moving to new york and I'm just wondering

    1) what would it be like to move to America alone at 18?
    2) what would be involved in going to college there (ie. visa, do i need to do SAT's, how relevant is the LC, housing etc.) - would it be better to live in student accommodation or not? do they even have student accommodation

    3) finally I'm looking for a portfolio course that i can do during school (ie. not taking a year off) and i want a course aimed at art -if possible fashion design and somewhere that can help me with a portfolio for abroad not just Ireland because i am definitely not staying here :( and i need a top notch portfolio because i want to try apply to some of the really good colleges even if i don't get through... :)

    thank you for your help

The main thing you need for FIT is money! Fes are €15,000 p/y let alone the materials etc.

The usually route is a transfer from a course here or in Europe. Would you consider St. Matrin's / Bunka and then a move mid or post Degree?

    Can yo speak any languages?

To delivery a full multi media portfolio could take two years plus, even without a leaving cert to do. I cant see how you could do this with out a year away from formal education.

Where are you in the country? I may be able to put you in touch with some ex students.

French is great, that will come in handy for work experience in Paris etc.

Try get an idea of whats expected in a portfolio, including evidence of networking, etc.

Swing by NCAD, see if you can get chatting to some 2nd year students. Some of them could be back from studying abroad.
