Maybe it's just me but are secondhand cars getting more expensive.

Eg: Honda civic 2006 1.4cc going for €7500.
    Vw golf 2007 1.4cc going for €8000.

Last year I was offered by a garage a 06 civic 1.8 for €7k and I let it slip ( dam ), but in the end it sold for €6.5k!! As he had it for 4 months on th 4 court and was the cheapest car by a mile.

Now I know you can get the golf with moon mileage for a bit less but what good is that.

    I think I'm just a hungry b,,,,x.

Shortage of decent secondhand cars might be the reason? People can't afford to change so they're hanging on.

The 1.8 civic are always cheaper than the 1.4, usual Irish mentality, "Jesus the tax would kill me, i'll just spend €1k more on a car that €300 cheaper to tax"

I was looking at a few 1.8 civic, nice car to drive but just don't like the styling. I was surprised there was a few early model saloons for around the €5500 mark.

I think as Jap styling goes they have done the best job at it. Really tidy looking motors, nice details. Particularly like the climate control switches on the passenger door.

Is it not the tax AND the insurance AND running costs that put people off.

Enda Kenny has implemented a 2nd hand car tax that dealers are instructed to incorporate into the sale price, the dealers collect the tax for revenue and return it quarterly.

Iirc it's about €749 for cars with OMSP of between €4000 and €6000 so that would explain the increase you see, it's all a bit hush hush :)

I think it's just the tax. My wife has a 1.8 type-s civic and it is cheaper to insure than most other 1.8 cars. I had assumed they would be categorised in a riskier band, but not for her anyway. In relation to running costs, they are quite frugal for a petrol from what I gather, and we have had no other issues with it apart from normal servicing for 5 years.

The tax is high (2007) in comparison to some of the post 2008 cars, but this is only a few hundred quid extra a year. If anybody is looking at a Civic I would advise them to go for the 1.8.....a far superior engine/drive IMO compared to the 1.4

The point is smaller vs bigger engines not the same size engine in different cars?

Looks like the value of private owned cars for sale have just increased by the same amount!

Indeed, I suppose if new cars increased in sale price drastically, nearly new would too :)

    Yep!

It's all smoke and mirrors really. Good, well minded used cars are thin on the ground and are being priced accordingly by retailers. Can't blame them.

I was just referring to his reference to being offered a 2006 1.8 last year for less money than a 1.4 is costing this year.

Tax & Insurance & Running costs of 1.8 civic would be more than they would for 1.4 civic, assuming same year, mileage etc...

You said people are happy to pay 1K more for a car that's 300 less to tax. However, it's not just the tax.... Insurance and running costs will both be higher.

There are some bargains to be had if you buck the trend

its the same with plant diggers etc.its cos over the last 4 years theres been very little new cars or plant sold in the country which mean very little good second hand around which drives up the price of good ones.

If people have less money to spend then they buy cheaper cars and demand for second hand is increasing, while supply is decreasing as less people can afford new cars. Additionally there was a massive economical downturn that caused higher that usual depreciation, which meant there was really good value for few years that really scared people from buying new cars - those days everyone requires new car to have low running costs to offset massive depreciation to be suffered. Maybe OP should consider getting unreliable and high running costs car, they are still quite cheap.

OP, I'd take €7500 all day long for my 07 1.8 civic

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
