I have been talking to a few lads recently in regards to what they give their cows after calving.
Most lads seem to be throwing 2kg of meal to autumn calvers but nothing to spring calvers. Condition is something i am not really worrying about as they are nearly always bang on calving down, but getting them back in calf is my main priority.
I used a lot of cidrs and prids last year however most seem to have repeated . I dont know whether it was my judging on time getting ai man, the ai man i was using, the weather or what but i should have nearly all the cows calved now but i dont.
I am currently feeding calved cows good silage ad-lib and around 1kg of meal. They have mineral licks and seaweed meal.
I am going to start feeding 2kg of dairy nut, any one any opinions.

Is it possible to pen the calves seperate and let them out to suck twice a day ? A mate of mine is doing that now and reckons the cows come bulling alot easier without the calf hanging out of them all day .

This is good advice here . Its time consuming and a bit of a pain but let the calves into the cows morning and evening and your cows will come on sooner

i'll start that mid jan , but was curious to see if most guys were feeding meal or do they reckon its too costly for cows calving dec/jan.

    Current feeding to cows:
    • Spring calving cows all now within 6wks of calving - Silage & Straw
    • Autumn calved cows with calves at foot currently in 5th week of breeding season - Ad-lib good silage & 2kg nuts. Calves also have nuts available
    • Freshly calved cows - Ad-lib good silage 2 kg nuts.
Not all the Autumn calvers cycled so 3 out of 8 have received prids. Not set up for feeding the calves twice daily, although I did a week of locking them in the creep area overnight. Don't think it helped.

What regime are you using with the prids? i.e. injection prior and when inserted or just the day before you remove them and how many days are you leaving them in for?

As per the back of the Munster AI catalogue:
    Day0 - Insert PRID
    Day8 - Inject estrumate
    Day9 - Remove PRID
Day11-12 - AI as they show standing heat
