The old year finished well for us with Droopys Jet winning the Champion Stakes and the Night of Stars 525 and then we received a huge boost with the arrival of four very well-bred pups, purchased by the Diamonds-Are-Forever Syndicate.

It meant that we entered the new near with big hopes. And we had a great start, with the four pups winning in the Red Mills Unraced Stake last weekend.

It will be a week-by-week thing now for them and we will be just hoping that they can keep qualifying and get experience.

They are old and seasoned enough, it's a case of getting races into them and then seeing if they will be able to step up in class.

Ashford Castle and the bitch Droopys Margo look the best at this stage and they would be our big hopes in the Clonmel stake.

Plus Five and Senior Cup are nice dogs also, but I feel they have a bit to find yet to rank up there with the others. But you never know with pups, they can make liars of you.

I can see Ashford Castle as a Shelbourne Park greyhound, but I doubt if he would suit Wimbledon, though you never really know. Margo will be too old for the puppy events coming up, but I hope she will be good enough to mix with the older dogs before long.

The game has been tough over the past few years and I owe a lot of gratitude to Laurence Blunt, Martin Wakefield and Paschal Taggart, who have been staunch supporters.

They are behind the new syndicate and they brought on board two of Laurence's business associates.

As four of the five owners are English-based, we'll obviously have to consider the Scottish and English Derbys.

We'll see how they are all progressing, but Droopys Jet looks the obvious one for both events.

What is worrying, though, about Jet is that he is so dependent on an inside draw and nowadays you get very few middle and wide seeds. We could go to Shawfield and find ourselves in trap six in the first round.

We operate a pretty tight ship with Kenny and my wife Paula chipping in with the dogs.

Tarbrook Tornado is the other open-class dog we have, but we are always hoping that a good young dog will turn up.

It would give us great pleasure if we could win another big prize or two this year for the boys. They have been very loyal owners and without them, we wouldn't be here at this stage.
