Editing OpenElec DNS settings

I have a Revo R3600 with Openelec 2.0. I want to use UnoTelly's SmartDNS service on it. I've found the settings area for it but I have no experience dealing with some of the fields. Here's what it asks for:

    [Static IP address]
    [Netmask PrefixLength]
    [Network Gateway]
    [Dns Server 1]

Can I enter anything I like for "Static IP address"? If so then I'm leaning towards the currently assigned DHCP address to simplify things. "Netmask PrefixLength" I have never even seen before but there is a setting already there so maybe that's sorted? Where would I find "Network Gateway"? My Eircom modem settings page? Obviously the last one is the SmartDNS server. Any help much appreciated guys as I'm a bit of a HTPC noob (if you already hadn't guessed as much! :D)

Go to XBMC System info and the network tab gives you all the current settings.

You can copy Network Gateway and Subnet Mask from the existing settings.

If you are using DHCP then just leave static IP blank and let it fetch an IP from your rotuer as normal.

  • Pretty sure you can't leave the static IP blank. You need to enter something before it'll let you at the rest of the settings.

I will try it later but it would be strange if you couldn't leave it blank

  • Ok. Do I have to disable DHCP on the modem too? I don't want that.

No but if you manually enter a static IP into OpenElec then you need to make sure that your does not give the same IP to another device.

It'll be easier if you can leave that setting blank so i'll double-check it on my HTPC later.

To give a static IP on your network you need to login to your router and find out what range of IP's are being given out through DHCP, you cannot assign from this pool or you may have conflicts.

would Tunlr have done ya instead of unotelly?

  • Does TvCatchup, BBC iPlayer and ITV Player work with Tunlr?

    I don't know, don't use it.

I know they have a uk dns/proxy cuz I remember reading they had trouble keeping up with the demand during the olympics so I can't see why not...try it and see anyway.

    I'm starting to get impatient.

Tell us the IP of your router and the range of IP addresses it's giving out for DHCP and I can tell you the settings. If you tell me the make and model, it's most likely at default settings, I can Google.

Right, login to the router on http://192.168.1.254, password is "broadband1". Under the lan section you'll see an option for Dhcp, report here what range of IP addresses the router is giving out. It will be something like 192.168.1.100-253.

  • "IP Pool Starting Address" is "192.168.1.1"
    "Pool Size" is "200"

Perfect, that means we can't use 192.168.1.1-200. We can use any addresses 192.168.201-253. Give it the following

Ip address: 192.168.1.250 (because it's easy to remember)
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (router, the gateway to the internet)
Dns nameserver: the ones you're wanting to use

This 192.168.1.250 is the address you can contact your HTPC from inside your lan, handy for android/iphone apps etc.

I had a typo, the gateway was wrong but is now edited
