Who would you rather have treat your wife and unborn baby? The best qualified person for the job or a young person with no experience?

You did :D And some of the so called experienced persons can be pretty incompetent too.
By your reasoning we should always hire the oldest and most experienced

    Why retire at all then?
My opinion your retired or your not which is it. Choose!
If a person retires, then they should stay retired. If the want to stay working, then stay working!
I think you're both missing the point. Lets presume a person begins working at 18. They are entitled to a full pension (half pay) after 40 years continuous service (i.e. at 58). They can choose to stay on until 65 but that would be financially foolish as they would be effectively working for half pay (as they would get half pay anyway via their pension). The sensible thing to do is to retire and seek reemployment with either the same employer or another.

All going well, I will be entitled to retire in 11 years time. I'll get a pension of half my pay and I plan to work again for another 10 years until I'm 65. I used to double job but don't at the moment but I regularly get offers of employment from the private sector.

I don't owe anyone a living as as another poster has said, the employers have no obligation to provide a social service. These employers tell me that they simply can't get committed young staff. One employer told me that 2 young staff left a week before Christmas because they were rostered to work on Christmas Day.
And some of the so called experienced persons can be pretty incompetent too
Indeed, but the employer can be very fussy about whom they re-employ. As has been said already, the employer will look for the best person for the job.

there are penalties if the person with 40 years service at 58 (very very very rare) retires before their contracted retirement age. Their pension and lump sum are reduced. Also if they are an A stamp, their pension would be reduced again.
