We are still trying to figure out where to stay as we want to be near the activity but not right in the centre of Paceville. We have shortlisted hotels to Le Meriden, Argento, Juliani, Cavalieri they all look lovely it's hard to choose.

Any other tips re transport, where to go would be appreciated. I heard you can do a day trip to Sicily which would be lovely but to be honest I read it can be rushed, up very early, spending a lot of time on the bus and it's expensive. We are there for a week but I think it might be better to comfortably travel around Malta and see Sicily maybe when I am in southern Italy sometime?

I visited Malta for a week in 2010. I stayed in Sliema, which is 15 minute walk from Paceville and close to Valletta. Basic hotel, very quiet. I got buses everywhere. They are really cheap and reliable.

Actually, I went to Sicily for a week after Malta. Flew into Palermo in the north and rented a car. Drove around the north and west coast to Catania, stopped off in small villages along the way. The town of Catania is OK, nothing compared to Palermo. Don't go to the beach near Catania as it is full of rubbish (floating tyre, shopping bags, cans, etc). Worst beach experience ever!

I remember looking into the ferry option, but flying was way cheaper and quicker!

One week in Malta is enough to see everything, unless you want to spend 3 or 4 days on a lazy beach.

Sliema is a good location, its on a major bus route and walking distance to paceville and St George's,St Julien etc.

The buses are cheap and regular and the area itself is quiet enough and devoid of highrises or tourist traps.

Avoid St paul's bay,Buggiba and Quara...they are overdeveloped tourist holes and expensive to boot.

April is a lovely time to visit btw..the weather is mild and the place is much quietr than in high season.

I was there for a week in January with my boyfriend. We stayed in the centre of Paceville (Baystreet Hotel).
Room was lovely and the location was excellent! (€1 shots within 200m :P )

A 7 day bus ticket for unlimited journeys around the island is €12.50 or so - great value!

Definitely do a day trip to Gozo, the ferry isn't very long but it's a great trip to do, the scenery is very different to Malta despite them being so close.

Mdina is their old capital city and it was my favourite part of the trip. It's totally medieval and very scenic, don't forget to visit the nearby catacombs too!

All in all, you'll be able to get around the entire island quite easily due to the bus service being very good.

There is also a ferry to/from Sliema to Valetta (capital) and it's much quicker (and more fun!) than getting the bus. I believe it was only €1.50 or so for a single trip.

I hope you enjoy Malta :D
