I'm getting the Stena Lines ferry across tomorrow. I'm trying to bring two hurls with me and I'll be going as a foot passenger.

I know Irish Ferries don't allow hurls. Do Stena have any restrictions in place about this?

Builders I know regularly bring their tools with them, I wouldn't have thought there'd be a problem with a couple of hurleys, I wouldn't think they could be considered a "Dangerous Good", although you could ring them before you travel to be 100% sure http://www.stenaline.ie/ferry/faqs/shipment-of-firearms-and-dangerous-goods/sq1/

I once brought a hurley from Shannon to London on Aer Lingus, it was signed and was going to be a gift for a departing director, no problem going through Shannon, getting off the plane in London someone mentioned "wouldn't fancy getting through Heathrow with that", I was bricking it going through passport/border control, the guys name badge behind the desk said Murphy and he just nodded at me :D

I'm leaving the house at 10 in the morning. Might give them a ring but I will more than likely be running late so I won't have time to.

I presume those builders would have their tools in a bag?

I can't find a bag big enough to fit them in. I might be able to put them into a black plastic bag I suppose.

Really want to get them over. Don't fancy the €20 charge to post them.

Have them in a black sack when going through customs, if you want to be really paranoid try to wrap them in a sleeping bag or something.

I'll try the black sack. Hopefully it works. Thanks for your help.

Best of luck with your travels, let us know how you get on once you get setup on the other side.

One is a Jack Carey and the other I'm not sure of. I got it a good few years ago and tried sanding it down to make it look newer. It didn't work and now I can't tell who made it.

    It's not a Star hurl anyway :(.

Arrived safe and sound. Managed to get the hurls over with me. The black sack worked a treat. They never checked me but it'd have been very difficult to spot them anyway unless they searched everything.

Now to scare the locals of North Wales with my axe-wielding skills :pac:.

In case you were interested I'm doing primary teaching over here and I taught a lesson before Christmas about hurling. I got a lend of two hurls off a guy over here and brought them in. I also brought in my Kilkenny jersey and I let the children try it on.

I did up a terrible PowerPoint presentation and showed them this video from YouTube. Then I showed them a few skills with the hurl and tennis ball (I had no sliotar, unfortunately). They loved it.

Then a couple of weeks after that our class had to do a presentation to the rest of the school at assembly. It was to be about something that they had learnt in class recently. My teacher decided it'd be great to do the hurling. We showed a 5 minute video and a few of the children read out a few lines. She asked after who would like to play it and, thankfully, about half of the children put their hands up :D.

My teacher was very, very interested in it. She asked me questions for about 15 minutes after class one day.

One of the slides on the presentation was entitled "The greatest ever?" and it had a picture of Henry Shefflin on it. If you go up to Prestatyn and ask the children there who the greatest hurler of all time is they will say King Henry :D.

Very nice video, nicely done and put together.

Great to hear that you got the hurleys over without any hassle

It was a long time ago and I just brought it through as hand luggage, you can't bring a bottle of water now but ~8 years ago I was able to bring a hurley through no problem :)

I'd imagine the best way now would be to get 1 of the hurley carry bags like this

my mate just brought some over from Galway for the nephew today, but he was in a van not on foot.pity he's gone home and can't have a play for a few weeks.does anyone make them here in london ?i've tried to get the wood to make them myself, but it's hard to get the correct grained planks.
wrapped up i can't see any problem at all getting them over, maybe they might get used if you get a stroppy customs man like my old man did in the 70's he asked 'what are these for sir?' my old man said 'if i had the time i'd happily show you !!' first off the boat and last to leave because of that arsehole.

I'd advice asking someone in London GAA or your local GAA club in London, they should be able to help you out, making hurleys is a craft, if you were to be able to make 1 straight away I'd be very very impressed.

My brother made one when he was 10. It was pretty fantastic for his age. It's still in the house. Wish I had a picture of it.

He made it out of a plank of red deel that was lying in the garage. Got the shape of it perfectly and managed to sand the edges so that it wasn't just a solid piece of wood.

I sent 6 hurleys over to a friend before xmas and cost was only 10 euro. hurley maker organised and posted them for me. When he comes home during yr for a weekend he usually posts back hurleys as they are not allowed as hand luggage on plane.

Postage to the UK isn't that expensive.

Have any of ye used HandCraft hurleys?

I've used them while in Canada and while at home. Torpey Hurley's in Clare are nice sticks!

I emailed Handcraft before I ordered about the balance/weighting/to make sure I wasn't going to get a load of ****e. I think I got 6 in total and 5 out of the 6 have been smashing (in total over 2 or 3 orders). 1 was only OK but I'd say if I was to get 6 from a hurleymaker myself I'd struggle to get 4 decent ones.

A way of Hurley makers getting rid of poor hurleys. Got a quote for 12 hurleys to USA and his price was not even competitive . Prefer going direct to Hurley makers.
