(I cant help it North Star 33) If you're 17.9 pounds then you should really look into gaining weight, unless you're 3 months old !

    ok, 17.9 Stone.
From my own experience improving diet is 75% of weight loss. The rest is exercise, I've been in the same boat where I exercise loads but eat what I want and the weight doesnt go anywhere, only when you watch whats going in does the weight start to go down.

I assume you mean 17.9 stone.

The only way to lose weight is by consuming a calorie deficit to what you are taking in. So consuming less calories than you use everyday.

Running may help burn some of the calories you take in but it alone won't help one bit.

Read the nutrition stickies here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055157091 and work out your calorie usage per day and set yourself a diet plan for a 500 calorie deficit below your daily expenditure which will give you a loss of around 1lb per week.

Losing weight is 90% diet for me. Exercise may help but it won't lose weight for you if your diet is bad.

If I want to lose weight I eat less snacks and unhealthy foods and walk more. Works for me.

running is not a way to lose weight.

eating less than you use is the way to lose weight

running will help make you fitter and means you use more.

you can lose weight by doing 0 exercise, if you eat correctly.

I Lost 3 stone in 3 months. Switched to only
Eating one meal a day. Salads.
    I take vitamin supplements too.
Now I don't even have to try. I eat whatever I want but get full very easily. I never get hungry anymore.

You seem to have a similar physique to me, I was a bit heavier than you though when I started to try lose weight. I agree with everything said above, its what you put down your throat that is the main problem. Exercise, personally doesn't make that much difference, it helps but I think it only helps keep the weight off not to lose its generally what your eating and drinking.

Personally as well I think the Booze is a major a problem, that's if you drink. My advice, stick to Vodka and Coke Zero, it helps.

Just a little advice. Keep a log of what you are eating. Be really specific and get a good idea of what your caloric intake is like.

This is a great little Calorie Burn Calculator

    http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc

It gives you an idea of exactly how much your are burning from day to day.

as previous posts said diet is the first think, in terms of exercise lift weights too help speed things up.

Hi OP, you sound like my partner, he is addicted to fizzy drinks & white bread, it just leads to bloatedness but he struggles to live without them! As others have said diet is crucial but a few tweaks is sometimes all it takes to see some difference - so cutting out fizz & baguettes would be a great start. In terms of exercise I love the physique you get from running, it gives a nice lean shape I find.
    Best of luck!

I like this thread a lot and I know this is a ridiculous question but for someone who's never ran before, how do you start? How long should you try go for at the very beginning?

I'd like to try it (more so just to be out in the fresh air a bit more) but I feel like I moron and am not really sure what I'm meant to be doing?!

Try the couch to 5k program. It's a good place to start.

at your current weight i would say the LAST thing you should be doing is running.

    Sort your diet out

    Sort your diet out

    Sort your diet out

    go walking daily

that should get you down 2-3 stone without much in way of excessive physical activity.

You might just be watching too many fat loss tv shows where they run the arse off the participants - thats all for TV. The above works better in the real world

If the OP is already doing mountain biking and football then he may as well keep the exercise about walking level, although certainly walking every day at a minimum (days they're not doing something else).

I have a question though, is running the best exercise for increasing weightloss? Is there some other version of cardio that works better? At the moment Im trying to balance between cardio and weights, but by God do I hate running!

rowing machines, skiing, swimming, cycling. all as good as running and all completely irrelevant if you haven't sorted your diet first.
