How to find out how my heating system works

Hi folks, something that has annoyed me for a time.. I'd like to know what exactly is going on with my heating setup (including solar). I open my hot press to a maze of braided, 3/4" & 1/2" pipework and a sealed 250L tank! I don't need too technical a detail, but it would be nice to know exactly what pipe is doing what and what valve is doing what for where and why :p

It is a gas fueled combi boiler and its a pressurised system with an expansion vessel above the hotpress pipework (in the attic).

Maybe some pics starting from the top of tank will help..

Top of tank (overflow pipe from Solar pipework coming across top)

Lagged solar pipework from wall mounted solar pump

Back wall of hotpress with braided hose mains feed. Out of sight in this shot, to the right side the 4th pipe on the back wall has a red valve much like to the left side in the shot below.

    Floor (to boiler I presume?)

Floor again including manifolds/thermostat valves for rads I guess?

Thanks for any pointers you can provide me with.
