We have a small farm that my Dad has worked part time all his life, but tbh we let it go in the last couple of years. We had only a small no. of cattle in the last and didn't do anything with them. A few months ago we bought some sheep and more bullocks. But because nothing was being done for so long we have fallen behind on all the updates regarding movement forms, census forms etc. I have just realised that we need a seperate herdbook for sheep (apparently you used to have just one herdbook for all animals). All we have is a bovine herdbook.

My concerns have been sparked today from reading about the need to return a Sheep Census Form. I believe it was supposed to be posted to us but because we didn't inform the Dept that we have sheep, they didn't know to send us one. I've found a helpline to call so will do that tomorrow.

My question to you is what are all the forms books that we need to fill out and keep updated.

    - We have a cattle herdbook that we keep up to date
    - Cattle are TB tested as is required
    - Do we apply to the Dept for a Flock Register?
    - I only KNOW about Sheep Movement Forms - we got one when we bought the sheep but that is the only paperwork we have for them
    - Do we need movement forms if we wish to sell cattle?
    - Are there seperate forms to be filled out when bringing animals to the factory?

Any light you can shed for us would be truly appreciated - I getting a little worries here :(

    Have a look here: http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/animalhealthwelfare/animalidentificationmovement/

I'd also advise registering on agfood.ie and then you can do all the registrations and movments on line. I can't talk to the sheep forms but have inserted answers to the cattle questions below

    - We have a cattle herdbook that we keep up to date You can do this online and is very handy.
    - Cattle are TB tested as is required They may also need to be TB or Brucellosis tested prior to sale. For TB it must have been within the previous 12m. For brucellosis I think it changed recently. Someone else may answer this or else ring your local DVO.
    - Do we apply to the Dept for a Flock Register?
    - I only KNOW about Sheep Movement Forms - we got one when we bought the sheep but that is the only paperwork we have for them
    - Do we need movement forms if we wish to sell cattle? For private farm to farm sales - yes. For sales to the mart - no.
    - Are there seperate forms to be filled out when bringing animals to the factory? Yes. There is a food chain information form that is available somewhere on the department website. Alternatively often the haulier will have blank copies.

Any light you can shed for us would be truly appreciated - I getting a little worries here :(

I'd also advocate ringing your local DVO as they are there to help. All depends on the person you deal with though!

I'd say definitely register online on agfood.ie
AND contact the DVO, so your paperwork is a little behind, as long as the dealings are above board and no messing with tags etc, while they may moan and bitch a bit there shouldn't be anything further than that.
I found our DVO very reasonable, I had an inspection for a pig herd number two years ago and already had pigs when he arrived.
When they see people making the effort and taking the initiative to get things right they are reasonable. If it goes on until they have to step in themselves it may be a different matter.

On the sheep movement side of things - you need a movement book.
You will also need Dispatch documents (you wont be able to sell sheep til you get this, as this is the receipt kinda book, which you fill out and a copy goes to the mart & another for purchaser)
    See here

Ring your local DVO - they will get you both. They should be able to tell you what to do re the sheep census as well, altho maybe this can be sorted online too...

You'll prob need to get some tags as well. There is a list of suppliers listed on that Dept page above, so you can order some from them. What kinda tags you need will depend on what your plans are (whether you want to sell in the mart, or whether you will be sending lambs to the factory, etc)

Best of luck with the sheep :)

If you are not getting a SFP , (single farm payment) you need not worry about the sheep census

if you dont send in the sheep census you wont activate the payment under the grassland sheep scheme. your paid based on the census i believe
