Me and a Friend are beginning to organise a J1 and Im pushing for NY although she wants to go to Myrtle Beach, SC with other classmates. Either way, I will be travelling to NY. So I was looking into organising it without using USIT, Sayit etc. Just wondering what I need to organise Visa, flights etc. I want to compare costs as im trying to budget. Also looking for info from others who have travelled to NY on a J1 on what its like to find a job, places to go/not to go, hostels, accommodation etc. Thanks :)

I have looked into this last year, spent a lot of time on it too.
Basically the J1 Visa is only issued with a Sponsor - a sponsor that any of the J1 agencies work with.
Without a sponsor organisation in the USA (I don't mean a sponsored Job) you can't get the Visa.
Don't waste your time - it's setup the way it is for a reason.

Also Myrtle Beach is good crack - a bit expensive, worked there for 3 weeks and then moved on myself.

I know a friend who just got a holiday visa and worked out there. Cash in the paw every Friday and he saved a lot by not going through the agencies. Could be very dodgy to do though

To work legally, you need a visa sponsor. Most employers won't do this because it's too much hastle to register with the SEVIS system, so you'll likely need an agency. There's about 400 of them, there's a list here http://j1visa.state.gov/participants/how-to-apply/sponsor-search/

However, the going rate is generally €500 for visas of less than 6 months, so whether you pay it upfront or through usit's insidious fees is up to you...
