It seems not, I emailed them earlier after downtime raised the point, they've just confirmed the proceeds go to parkrun uk, so apologies downtime, its not supporting local parkruns at all.
I checked it with the country manager for parkrun Ireland. So, I'm pretty sure it is correct.

Hopefully the guy that replied to me was wrong! Lets investigate and try to get the right info.
No parkrun for me for the next 2 weeks then I want to have a bash at ardgillan, the views make up for the hills!

I'm pretty sure I heard an interview with one of the top Parkrun guys about 6 weeks ago and he said that any money raised in Ireland stayed in Ireland.

Sure that I heard the same thing too on one of The parkrun Shows.

Not inconceivable that all the cash gets sent to the parkrun UK bank account, but just need a simple break down of how many barcodes they posted to Ireland and then it's parkruns problem to sort out how much cash goes where rather than ERS having to bother with figuring that out, it really isn't their problem what parkrun global wants to do with the money.

Has anyone tried the Popintree parkrun in Ballymun? How would it compare to any of the others?

Similar to St. Anne's, flat, 3 laps, nice park, easily accessible from M50

I was up in Belfast at the weekend and gave ormeau a go.
Pretty good course with just a little drag in a couple of places.
The course is outlined with timber waymarks and also have fixed km markers which were spot on.
Fully recommend anybody in the city for a weekend to get out and join them!

No, I know absolutely nothing about running in Kilkenny, but might be interested if that was actually happening.

It's on the Harriers' website but all it says is Christmas morning run at 11..

Could be just a club run or something?

Kilkenny parkrun is a fantastic location , particularly for parkrun tourists - stay centrally in one of the hotels and just rock on up to the castle at 9.15 warm up , run and a nice cup of coffee at the outdoor cafe at the main castle after the run... - the route itself is 2 and a half laps of the park where you face a hill climb on the 2nd 4th and 5th k , the 1st and 3 k are flat and slightly downhill and quite fast , surface is good throughout but doing that hill 3 times is a killer :-) so dont expect pb's..., lovely parkrun looking forward to booking another weekend away in the new year and doing it again ...Garinne and team are super friendly so dont forget to say hi...

Well I certainly wont be staying in a hotel, from KK originally but the rest if it sounds good

So, what new events will we see in 2015? I see Tralee parkrun is due to start on Jan 24th.

That's great progress! I made some inquiries about getting one going in Cork city but it went nowhere. I was told that some anchor group with funding was needed which I thought was strange as I understood it was all done by volunteers

I think that funding is needed to buy the bar code tabs, scanners, watches, lap top etc, I know with other park runs they've gotten some support from their local county council. Did Parkrun HQ not go into those details and suggest ways to get the funding?

If you are still interested in setting up a parkrun in Cork I would get back in touch with parkrun HQ, something has got lost in translation somewhere along the line with the above quote. Funding should be relatively easy to put in place for a parkrun in Cork, the funding may already be there just waiting for a local team to come together.

Makes sense, when I got in touch with Matt at Parkrun he passed on the contract details for the people who'd asked about a parkrun in Cork but didn't mention what was needed from a funding viewpoint.

It was a representative from the HSE who asked if I represented a group with cash to sponsor it rather than parkrun HQ.

I think each new event needs to secure money up front to purchase the computer equipment, scanners etc from parkrun. County sports partnerships appear to sponsor some runs in the Republic, while councils appear to support others.

I was told one of the issues with Cork city was finding a suitable location.

According to the latest newsletter from parkrun Ireland, there will be other new events starting in already established areas. I understand Bray in Wicklow may also be coming on board early enough in the new year.

2015 promises to be a busy year and it'll be good fun getting around the country, visiting places I've never been to before.

From what I've picked up I believe that its's something like £6k that is needed for the startup equipment, half of which the local event needs to find through local sponsorship/ donations. Then parkrun on a national level stumps up the remaining cash from their new events fund.

Of course currency, amounts and what actually happens in Ireland is another matter, but that's what I picked up on how UK events begin now in terms of funding. There is a parkrun Ireland donations page here: http://www.parkrun.ie/aboutus/donations/

If you identify yourself then they try and allocate your donation to your local event, so that they can pay for things like backup scanners, extra cones, stuff. Then a portion of the donation is put into a pot to help with funding new events as well. You'll also find about donations to your local event on the "About Us" page for each event.

Regards Cork, I heard away back Ballincollig Regional Park being considered but there was opposition as it was too close to Macroom, about 30mins and also 50mins from Clonakilty. Ballincollig Regional Park would be very good as recently an excellent surface was put down and its flat. Just like Clon, it would have to be a looped course. I believe the path around the pitches is about 1.5K

I think it's more likely to encourage more people to run in Macroom and Clonakilty if anything. Once one is setup in the main population centre then more people will know about parkrun after a while and then go off in search of others to run. There are now at least 4 parkruns within 30 minutes of my house, possibly more if the traffic isn't an issue on the motorway, and more still within 50 minutes if you pay the toll to enter Wales. If Bere Island can cope with a parkrun with their population of 1 man, his dog and a couple of seagulls, then a city the size of Cork should certainly have a population to make use of one without impacting on other locations any.

I can understand why those in Macroom might be wary of one in Ballincollig but even leaving aside the possibility of people coming from the city Ballincollig has a much bigger catchment than Macroom. The attraction of doing something on your doorstep is much greater than having to travel half an hour either way. I can't really see scenario where fewer people are running if Ballincollig has its own parkrun.

Hit up the Kilkenny Parkrun this morning. Nice course and good atmosphere. Bar run from myself though. Ended up essentially just using it as a training tempo run.

Personally I think that both Ballincollig & Cork city should have their own park runs! My own viewpoint is that I'm not going to drive somewhere to do a park run so Macroom is out for me. Ballincollig would be better as it's a handy bicycle ride away but obviously something in town would be better.

If only the new park for Cork would actually open! Here's the preview on a 5k I did there 3 years & it's still not open :(

I know that Matt Shields ( parkrun country manager ) has been working hard with interested parties in Cork to get one up and running , Tramore Valley Park has been mooted as an ideal site ( when it opens ) however the parkrun charter states "Our aim is to bring a parkrun to any area or community that wants one. " my emphasis , there has to be grassroot support to get it off the ground , the model requires a core team of dedicated volunteers to get an event off the ground , If anybody here on boards feel that they might be in a position to make a contribution in Cork or indeed in another location then I would encourage them to contact Matt (matt@parkrun.com) hes a great guy and would love to chat to anybody about what can be achieved

Good news for Sligo. Is it a fairly flat track?

Good news for Irish parkrunners - finally we will have Club tee shirts - http://www.parkrun.com/news/
Also there is to be a new club shirt for those that have volunteered 25 or more times...

No idea myself. I'll be going to the first one whether flat or not, although hope it is flat.

Meanwhile, New Ross suggested they are starting late Feb/early March

Anyone have the low down on Clarisford parkrun (kilalloe)? Is it generally flat?

It is more or less flat. I managed to run one of my quicker times there. There is one slight rise and fall on each of the four laps. It is almost all on trail paths.

Nice spot and friendly volunteer team down there too.

Should be a busy parkrun morning tomorrow with all the new year runners out in force, it'll be interesting to see if attendance records are broken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 472 ✭✭Amigaman

registrations across the various parkruns are strong ( http://wiki.parkrun.info/index.php/Registrations_this_Week ) always a good sign :-) - sad to note that a parkrunner died at a newyears day event in the UK . Graham Petrie a vetern parkrunner collapsed at the New Year's Day Frimley Lodge parkrun , I'm sure the thoughts and prayers of all runners here are with his family and friends ..

A very wet morning in Ardgillan but good to see nearly 60 there, I'd say lots of people postponed their first parkrun of the year.

Check a few posts back. Definitely not the easiest as the Castle Park isn't the flattest.

There's a 200m windy drag that you do 3 times in the run in KK which is tough and some of the surface is gravelly so you won't run a PB there but I think it's a great course to see where your fitness is at. Lovely view of the castle and grounds. 2 large loops followed by a shorter loop to finish.

I found Kilkenny tough due to having to run up the same hill three times. Not a pb course but a lovely setting. You can still run a decent enough time while enjoying the scenery
