    Hi

One of my kids has a 3ds and looking for recommendations for how best I might communicate with them during the day.
Basically, I want them to be able to send me the odd message from the wifi at home and for me to be able to reply from Mobile or PC. ( don't want them to use a mobile yet.)

    Cheers in advance
    Redman

Simply put: You can't. There's nothing on there for this.

The only way that this would be possible is simply using an email site through the built-in browser.

This may be possible when they allow you to use a Nintendo Network ID on 3DS, and when they launch the Nintendo Network web application...might be a while until then though. Best you can do is get another 3DS and bring that to work with you.

Okay so the only way I see I could is to access an email account through the browser and set up a gmail account for the child?

Yeah, at the minute something like that is the only way that I can think of. Of course it means that there won't be any notification generated.

If you're any bit good with web design/networking you could always try something like this and host it on your local network with something like WAMP/LAMP, or on a remote host:

You could even format the page to display nicely on the 3DS screen.

There is a web-site called 3dsplaza.com but you should look around and make sure it's okay for your children.
I haven't used it myself so can't say if it's okay or not, but it looks shiny on the 3ds.

mibbit works too I believe, so you could make an irc channel and password protect it so only you and your children can join it.

Most web-based email majiggies should work in the browser too.

Going by the parents concern over mobile usage (quite rightly) it may appear parent was unaware of Internet capabilities far more dangerous and exposed than phone. I only discovered the bet in it a little whole ago lol.

Yes I use a great device call a Net Genie router for Wifi constraints which lets me control amount of time and when on the web and completely control what sites they can access. Very pleased with it.

So far no solution found that I happy with for the messaging yet.

Does Net Genie work well with 3DS / Phone's etc? I' have thought there is just too much content out there now, and too many ways to obtain? I've heard of it from other parents using shared PC's etc.

Works perfectly for me, it's controlling the internet access no matter what the device, the controls are superb. e.g. you can stop all types of IM sites, p2p etc...

You can restrict completely down by type of site , specific site and then the kids can come to me with a site they can't access and I can add into their approved list at will with my code.

The number one problem you'll always run into is if they're playing a game, the messages will go un-noticed, because the 3ds doesn't have a notification system for the browser, which is the only way you can currently send messages to 3ds users from anything other than a 3ds at the moment.
If the 3ds gets miiverse, then it'll be possible to make a private community for yourself and them and use that, which should get notifications.
But I'm not sure if nintendo plan to do that much on the current 3ds or 3dsxl.
The rest of the internet seems sure, but I just don't see it, to me it'd require a new hardware model, or gimping the current firmware's ability to "multitask" which is already pretty much gimped.
