    99.999% will fail.

Official NCT manual (available for download from NCT website) states clearly:

    Thread Hijack...

Do you fail the NCT if a side light is gone. By side light I mean like the little orange reflectors on the side skirting here, not the parking lights...

Funny considering my Audi A4 with retro fitted HID's just passed.

Once they are focused properly and not blinding other drivers, it should be fine.

They're not reflectors or side lights, they're known as 'repeaters' because they flash in sync with the main indicator bulbs at the front and rear. They signal to someone driving to your side that you intend turning or changing lane.

From S.28 of the NCT Manual...

Where “repeater” indicators are fitted as standard equipment, these must be working.

Faulty side repeater (indicator) = fail.

Unsure about faulty side marking lamp, and that's the one mentioned by Cionád I think...

    ^^^

I think what he's referring to are the side markers not the indicator repeaters

He mentioned that they're orange and they look like repeaters to me.

The orange strips built into the sides of the front & rear S40 bumpers? Definitely repeaters.

Repeaters are the clear side indicators in the wing which flash in unison with the inidicators.

Side Markers are are the orange lights on the side that light up in unison with the head and tail lights. they don't flash, they are not indicators / repeaters

An A4 has a projector headlamp, so no reason for HIDs to fail once focused correctly.
It's the muppets with HIDs in ordinary headlights that will (should) fail.

HIDs fitted to this style headlight should fail

Hids fitted correctly to this type should not fail

No not the repeaters/indicators, they are ambient lights on whenever the car is on: http://www.bildites.lv/images/fchm82h17ynxa440rx.jpg

On the volvo s40 pre-2000 they whole unit has to be changed rather than the bulb inside, that's why I'm asking. :)

Is that legal? The NCT manual mentions 'side lights' which have to be white to the front and red to the rear.

Side reflectors must be orange but if that's what they are, I'm curious as to exactly why we're being asked about them.

This is the question we're dealing with, it's kinda confusing because he mentions 'side light' and 'little orange reflectors' in the same sentence.

There's no mention of any such light in the NCT so I'd say they won't fail you if they're not working.

However like the original Volvo third brake light, the unit itself might even be illegal as per my previous post so if the bulb is broken, it will pass as a reflector!

They act as reflectors when the car isn't on. When the car is running there is a bulb inside which lights up. One of these bulbs is gone on my car, so will it fail?

It's a tricky one alright, as far as i know its only Volvo's that have side markers over here, as opposed to the states where the majority of cars have orange/red side markers.

It passed the last NCT with all four working so I doubt they'd have a problem with the lights themselves. I think they are standard on all s40's.

Passing as a reflector is good enough for me. :)

and only if the have the right "DC" or "DCR" marking too that ensures that the lights are type approved for a HID bulb!

If it's the only thing wrong with your car I doubt they will fail you on it.

If they do, you have reasonable ground to dispute the failure on as side markers don't seem to be specifically covered in the NCT manual.

Although, if they are there, they should technically be working.

If you really dont want to replace them, I'd chance it. Failure will only be visual anyway so it wont cost you anything for a retest if itis the only things it goes down on.

If it were me though, id just get the replaced as I hate having any sort of bulbs blown on my car :P

+1 However he said earlier that it's not just a bulb, the whole orange unit has to be replaced and as a proprietary part it probably won't be cheap.

Less than €20 delivered from eBay and a few minutes with basic tools to fit.

HID fitted to a non HID fitment should not be an automatic fail. That's just stupid. Those NCT eijets seem to make up their own rules and forget them when it's convenient, or if a €50 note is left in the car for them it would seem.

I think if HIDs are fitted, they should only be fitted by a professional and on a suitable, non reflector headlamp car. For example; I drive an FTO and have HIDs installed from factory. I've since had them replaced by a quality aftermarket kit. Most FTOs did not come with factory HIDs, but they are easily and safely fit into the existing headlamp. They don't blind anyone, because they are non reflector headlamps. Without them, it's actually dangerous, because the standard lights are very poor on the FTO.

The biggest sinners are the ones in Jeeps with aftermarket HIDs and reflector lamps. Burns the eyes out of your skull.

Thats very silly, why would you want to fit an aftermarket HID kit into a headlight that already has HID bulbs?

You might have asked before saying it was silly. When I bought the car, one of the lights was not working. Bulbs were switched around, but the same unit failed. The unit was fried, so I ordered a new kit. Got the old one back and it was badly corroded. Just as well I didn't order 1 replacement unit. Both were looking a bit worse for wear. The new kit was installed professionally and works great. No mention of it at 2 NCT tests so far.
