    Hi,

My learner permit expired there on the 27th of December and since I cancelled my first test my date is now the 6th of January(It was the 4th of December previously but it clashed with an exam). I would have thought that the RSA would have alerted me if I couldn't take the test so I'm presuming I'm allowed to take the test. Can anyone explain to me if I need to renew ASAP and if renewing a learners permit can be done quickly in the motor office.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You will need to renew before the test. If you get in the car the tester will check your licence, tax, insurance and if all is not in order will automatically fail you.

can be done quickly in the motor office.

yes it can. They'll do it there and then and give you a receipt for it, which I presume will do the test centre. You'll have to bring a passport with it to the test centre.

They ask to see your learner permit before you start the test and it's up to YOU to make sure it's in date.

Get to the motor office asap. They won't give you a new one on the spot, but even if you don't have the new one by the day of the test they will give you a receipt. I would ring the test centre to make sure they will accept this on the day just to be sure to be sure.

I actually know someone who wasn't allowed to sit the test because the receipt was not a valid licence for test purposes. Its up to you to make sure you're able to sit the test. It might depend on how flexible the tester is also............

Don't know if you're in Dublin, but I always found the Smithfield office to be quick for sending out licences/permits. Like through the letterbox in two days quick.

Visit the office in person and explain your situation to the person behind the counter calmly, politely and with a smile.

The receipt is not enough. Get to the tax office and explain the urgency.

Agree with other posters, you need to do the following, tomorrow and no later:

    Go to the tax office.

Fill out the form for learner permit / renewal.

Speak to the person behind the counter and explain the predicament and urgency.

Bring all associated documentation that you have - theory test cert, passport, existing permit and the appropriate fee (~€20).

    Thanks everyone.

I'm reading the application form now and it says "All applications for a first learner permit must be accompanied by a theory test cert & eyesight report"

It also says that you don't need a passport or birth certificate if you already hold a permit.

Does this mean I can walk in tomorrow with 2 passport photos, my old license and the fee and it should be ok? Or am I missing something?

    Thanks.

Yes, that should work. The Motor Tax offices are losing their control of licences from 12/01/13, Until then according to RSA website they can issue on short notice. So follow the checklist on Learner Permit Renewal Form
    Best of luck.

Out of curiosity - what would happen if this was the second learner license? You can't get a third license without a test and I presume you can't do the test without a license.

You apply for the test with your expired 2nd LP, print out the confirmation letter of your test booking and take it to the Motor Tax Office with all the relevant paperwork .i.e Photos, form, fee etc....

You will then be issued with a 1 year LP. Word to the wise though, LP's are going to cost €35 from the 19th, that's an increase of over 100%.

Went in yesterday and got robbed for the 35 euro...explained my situation and she said she'd post it out today so it'll definitely arrive before the test date.
