Has anybody owned or have any experience of them, especially an automatic diesel, but any advice and views would be appreicated.

I currently own a 406 Coupe and had not have any bother with it but its time for a change and would like something bigger in space.

    Cheers

Other than seeing a black one with lovely looking red/plum leather aroung delgany, i dont have experience of the coupe, but it really does look lovely and stands out so much more than the default 3 series coupe.

Guy in Newry I know through citroen forums picked one up recently (06 I think for around £3500-4 iirc) He has loads of XM's and CX's but went modern for his commute. He seems to really like it. It's a 2.7 V6 diesel auto. I had a drive of it and have to say its the business. I'd spend my own money on one. Just a pity they never made one with the proper badges. :)

I owned one - originally had a 406 coupe and moved on to a 407 coupe (and also a BMW 840 - no comparison!). Anyway, I thought the 407 coupe was a super car. Black with cream leather interior. It was a 2.2l petrol so in the current climate, not ideal (so they say!) but all in all, really nice car. It's a heavy car on a 2.2l - the 2.9 v6 I would imagine, would be more ideal to give the car a bit of punch - as above, it's a very heavy car. However, it comes with all the bells and whistles as standard - front and back sensors (for when the missus drove it!) etc. Can pick them up nowadays for nothing also - when I bought it, I got the original sales receipt - €46k new! Madness. I, at the time, got a great deal but since, sold it for very cheap to shift it on. Don't see too many around - weren't exactly a big seller for peugeot however I would highly recommend one.
They came out with a new bellagio model in 2008 as far as I remember and it came with a 1.9 litre diesel (but for some reason, only cloth interior in that range, I believe). Probably the one to go for if you're thinking tax etc but not many to be found in Ireland I suspect. A trip to the UK might be the way to go. Come back and post pics if you don't happen to follow through.

Cheers for the information. tell me more about the 8 series, would consider if the funds allowed it. is the 840 the V8 one?

Bought my 406 from a main dealer in the UK, bells and whistles for peanuts amout of money, will do the same for next car. To be honest only thought about the 407 as an option recently when I saw an advert for one, in a dark colour, no more silver, on donedeal

    No problem.
As for the 8 series - well, it terms of an absolute stunner, I don't need to explain! It, in my opinion, is a fantastic looking car and certainly no BMW has ever come near it. It was always (and still is) the car of my dreams, ever since I started liking cars so ownership was a must for me. I've lived the dream and am glad I did! From that point of view, if you're in any way similar, I'd say, go nuts and buy one!

Repairs & maintenence costs are high on the 8 series. Mine was the 4.4l v8 engine - 1997 so post nikasil issues. I would stay away from the 1996 and older models myself. If you can manage an 850csi then go for it - top of the 8 series range. You will have the higest tax band of course but such are the joys with big cars. I owned mine for 4 years - I did pump about 6-7k into it over that time in terms of repairs, maintenance etc (excluding tax, insurance, petrol) - however, when I sold it, it was in top order. I replaced both back boxes and had suspension parts replaced, tyres etc. Nothing major I might add, but it all adds up.
An 8 series can be picked up for cheap money these days but the key is getting a very good example - full service history and the likes. Body work needs to be in good order and check for rust (which you'll nearly always find around the sunroof). I must admit, I'd buy one again in a second but I have to tell myself, been there, done that so I'll move on. It'll certainly cost a lot more than running and keeping a 407 coupe. The drive however is a million miles better in the 8 series needless to say - it's a super big smashing looking BMW cruiser.
As before, whatever you decide, make sure to come back and post!
