Hi folks, I'm replacing my Volvo C70 Coupe (boo hoo!) and in the market for something more family friendly.

My budget is between €15,000 to €20,000, would like something mid to large size, it has to be fuel efficient so probably Diesel and I'd like something post 08 with low emissions as I'd prefer not to have to pay more than €300 per year road tax. Don't want anything cheapo or gutless.

Anyone throw out a few suggestions of the type of car I could be looking at? Don't mind hatch-backs or SUV's either. Oh and if anyone's interested in a C70 Coupe let me know :)

Would it fleece me to service that puppy? No question they are lovely cars. Get a lift to work in one 2 to 3 days a week, my only concern would be parts/servicing.

Been looking at 5 series myself, budget will allow an 08-10.
Does this model have as big a problem as the forum posts would suggest, timing chain awkwardly positioned costing thousands to repair?

It's the only thing putting me off.

They've held their price fairly well. I landed a 08 520D with 6K on it for just shy of 30K some 4 years back. It wasn't M sport but had plenty of kit. 20K is a lot for a 5 year old car.

Any comment re my post above, and also, what has the annual maintenance cost been, roughly?

Spending 15-20k and looking for a car with low road tax, i have friends in the UK/States and in mainland Europe who just can't get their head around our taxation system. We seem to just accept it though as it's the norm as we see it, mad tbh.

I have heard of that engine out/timing chain issue but a buddy of mine has a 2008 since 2009 with no issues. If you like the way a car looks and drives buy it ! beaner88 might be so kind to let us know how his one is going?

I'm on my 4th beemer and I certainly dont plan on changing my car patern any time soon..Just bring it to an independant..Main dealers are all fairly over priced no matter what make of car you have. I am by no means rich but can easily maintain my e46..I did have a timing chain issue in a 318ci that did cost 800 notes but appart from that just oil, bushes, spark plugs..normal car maintanance.

I hear what you're saying. TBH low road tax is a very nice to have as I'll probably be keeping the car for 5yrs but the thread title is perhaps a bit misleading as low road tax isn't the be all and end all when you're shelling out 20k.

70mpg? 50-55mpg in good conditions I'd say. Residuals are poor also.

68 and 76 MPG for various models with that engine According to Parkers.co.uk.

Have a 2006 E46 coupe so I'm hoping it wouldn't be too much more than that for servicing / maintenance etc.
Will try pick one up in the new year.

Claimed and actual mpg are always different things.

My current car claims it'll do 67mpg but I'm averaging c.55mpg and that's not at all bad.

all down to how you look after it, keep it well serviced with recommended oil, but saying that when you buy a used car its a gamble whether it was looked after properly by previous owners, also very important on latest generation diesels is good quality diesel, be very warey filling up in non brand cheap priced diesel stations
