Customs delays

I have a package coming from outside the EU. It was sent to customs on the 19th, and I received a letter on the 20th asking for details for purposes of VAT, etc. I sent this information on the 21st.

An Post tracking still has my item listed as being in customs. I assume Christmas has caused a big delay. However I work overseas, in a developing country without a real postal system, and I'm now quite concerned that my package will not arrive before I go back (January 15th).

Anyone any idea how much longer I can expect the customs delay to be?
