    Might be educational, but I'd look at finding free parts on the likes of Adverts rather than spending any money on it.

    How about spending a little to get a newer second hand PC, or getting them something like the Raspberry Pi?

    The Pi in particular is very versatile and crazy cheap, get them to build a media centre with it, or it might take them down the route of hardware hacking, home automation, python development or loads of other things.

    Its Socket 775, so that was a good start, but unfortunately it only supports the weaker CPUs from that line up. Also has a 2GB limit.

    It could still be used fine, I'd give it Ubuntu or Mint and use it as a browser machine no bother, but there isnt much upgrading in her.
