New PSU recommendation

I think my PSU is on the blink, I have it for a good few years now, probably my oldest component, and I think its the culprit for some serious issues and crashes I've been having.

So I need a new one, it needs 8pin for the CPU and two 6pin PCIe power cords then obviously some SATA connectors.

    Main machine info is

    Win 8
    ASUS m5a97 motherboard
    Radeon HD 6870
    AMD Phenom II X 4 965 3.4ghz
    256gb crucial M4
    Corsair Vengeance 16GB 1600MHz DDR3

After a quick look around, I'm thinking this guy could be good?

Looking for a good brand, and one that will be useful if I'm upgrading in the future too. Also obviously like to keep it under about €100. SO any suggestions welcome, also cheapest place to buy.

    Thanks.

The one you linked is a good PSU. So is this one for just a bit more,

I'd go higher than 650 though if you want to futureproof it. I'd also stick with corsair, have one myself, very solidly built.(I think it has a 7 year guarantee with it) Don't think you'd get one for under 100 though.

So you think there is a good chance he will go x3 crossfire or sli in the future?
    Seriously?
Because 650 watt is good enough for gtx 680 x2 sli

Newer parts are getting more efficient if anything
The build he has now will draw will under 400 watts.

Only the op can answer that one. I had an ocz zx 850, which I had to send back (was getting bsods all over the place, an absolute nightmare to solve) in favour of a corsair 1050, which will run whatever I through at it.

But that had nothing to do with the rated watts. OCZ are not a reliable make imo, corsair are.

Yeah, I don't think I should be needing more than 650w, won't be going to mad in the near future.

On this one (http://www.dabs.ie/products/xfx-650w-xxx-edition-semi-modular-80--bronze-psu-89YH.html?refs=50544&src=3) am I right in saying that there are detachable cables so I can cut down on the amount of wires I have in my case? I like that idea of that.

Anyone any experience of XFX over Corsair?

    Thanks

Yeah Modular PSU you can remove cable you are not using.

Corsair have a great repitation. I don't know anything about XFX

XFX are Seasonic OEM. They're very good PSU's for the money.

Thanks I didn't know that Seasonic have a great rep :)

The Corsair is Seasonic OEM as well but, For the money I'd go with the modular XFX.

XFX only use Seasonic as their oem, so they make some quality PSUs.

The Pro 650w xxx is based off the Seasonic M12II bronze 650W so has very good credentials

Went with the XFX, appreciate the help guys. Fingers crossed PSU is actually the root of my problem.

Bugger, turns out it wasn't my PSU. I was just too lazy to diagnose further. Trying more stuff now.

Might have to put this PSU on adverts now as I'm pretty strapped for cash this month, if anybody around these parts is looking for one give me a PM.

You can return any item under distance selling regulations once its under 7 (working days) although you will have to bear the cost of the P&P back to the retailer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,860 ✭✭✭Julez

Really, even if its been opened and used?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭N64

You might be able to depending on the retailers return policy.

I presume you bought it off dabs? Here are their returns policy:

Hmmm, you might be right, put I probably wont get refunded postage and, looking at an post, to send registered post to UK costs about €40 for 3kg package. UPS isn't much better, might not be worth my while.
