I've a 2001 Toyota Yaris which is failing the NCT on a small issue, which could be an expensive fix.

Just wondering what the value for this would be for scrap?

Yaris will always have a good value. I dont know why you would scrap it. Get a proper mechanic to fix it and it will be worth a fair amount as they are always wanted

Agree. Unless it going to cost over 7 or 800 to fix then don't scrap it.

What is actually wrong with it?

x2... never see a yaris selling for less that 1000-1250 unless its in ribbons, so its probably worth repairing.

whats wrong with it? what part of the country are you in?

It keeps failing the NCT because of braking imbalances, I think i need a new equalizer valve. They're very difficult to get second hand im told because there were three different types in Yaris's of this year. New they're about 400 quid. Plus it needs a new windscreen.:(

I'm in Limerick if anyone's interested. I don't want to see her scrapped because it's otherwise a very nice car.

There seems to be a shortage of these scrapped, so I'm thinking it should be worth a few quid.

What's it worth as is, not to scrap but for someone to fix up?

500 ish or if your lucky a small bit more as is i'd say for a non tested needing work car. you might be left waiting for a sale too. cheapest option still appears to be to fix it tbh. car tested could be with the guts of 2k so a 400 quid repair is very justifiable. check and see if your insurance policy has windscreen cover too.

I checked and I don't have windscreen cover so it'll be a trawl through the scrapyards.

Does your insurance have windscreen cover?
It could be worth ringing the local Windscreen place and getting a quote for a screen, they might be quite reasonable.
Braking imbalances can be a pain but the equalizing valve shouldn't be 400!
I'd check with another Toyota dealer for a price on that part.

sure it would only be about 30 euro for windscreen cover, who is to say that the windscreen won't get broke a week later by a stone thrown up by another vehicle?

Have you tried micksgarage online. Could well have whatever you need and for lower than what you've been quoted so far.

An equalizer valve and a windscreen isn't something you would crap a car over especially if the rest of the car is in good working condition. I think any decent breakers yard would have more than one yaris in stock so finding a valve shouldn't be all that difficult even if there is two or three diffrent types of valve. If you count the number of pipes coming out of the valve you might have a better chance of finding the correct one. :)

As for the windscreen id be going to a windcreen place and getting a new one fitted.

Please..those of us who would, do not make it known. And it is unethical and fraud. And if everyone does it we do not get free windscreen cover.

I doubt it'll last until my next policy and I don't think you can buy windscreen cover on it's own?

Cheers, I tried them no luck that i can see. It's a difficult part to search for coz from what I can tell some people call it a brake equalization valve, a brake compensation valve or a brake proportioning valve, that and there's seemingly three different versions for this type of Yaris!

That's great, I've not made up my mind to sell yet, but yup gimme a shout.

Take the valve out if it. Go onto partfinder.ie and get the numbers of all breakers who have the sane model yards for breaking and ring them. Get them to email you a picture of their valve and the part number if it can be seen on it and compare it to your own.

Ring a windscreen place and price a new screen. They're not that expensive, I have had windscreens replaced in my last 3 cars and the insurance co sent the cheque to me each time and its a standard amount they cover for...€225 in each case for 3 very different cars.

Is it a bad idea to put a secondhand windscreen in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,874 ✭✭✭padma

Not at all Frank, as long as it's done properly.

It can be done but the problem is taking a windscreen out if a car without damaging it. Windscreen bond sets like concrete and screens generally crack when removing them.

No problem at all. One of my younger sisters had one which was damaged in a crash. She hated getting rid of it. Hope you sort this out and good luck :)

windscreen could be 180 euro fitted so not that expensive for a brand new .... as far as i remember, second hand in scrapyard will 50 , plus you have to have special glue, i never done myself windscreens, but my friend went to scrapyard after it, he paid 20 extra to staff to get it removed from donor car, and they broke 3 windscreens, 4th was successful removal :D

Regarding that brake valve, id suggest you get second and third opinion. Maybe could be way cheaper solution to get it fixed. But you have to find honest garage, which would be interested fix your car, not milk money out of you on regular basis. ... maybe would need travel longer distance to garage, which has high recommendations from other people. Yaris really reliable car, get it fixed, and happy days .

PM me her VIN number, I'll try to find out what options you have. It's possible you may get a 2nd hand one from the other 'yota. :)

Yaris makes serious money, even a 2001 with intergalactic mileage makes €1500. Well worth sourcing a second hand part. Good car but over rated IMO they burn a lot of oil but at the same time there was nothing on the market that touched it. e.g Corsa, Clio

we have a 01 yaris with 150k miles, it's the only car we have and I don't check oil levels between services, (10k miles) , doesn't use a spoon full

Op have you tried Ivers and Cullinan (nenagh) for the part ? I found them very good in the past when an ex toyota dealer in limerick tried to fleece us
IMO scrapping the car would be last resort
