8x4 ipe is about 15 euro a metre , sheeting is about anything from 2 euro upwards, fibre cement sheeting is 20 percent dearer than metal sheeting

What about 6x3 timbers 4.8m long?

15 euro plus the vat for a treated 6 by 3, i would recommend 7 by 3 though which is 17 plus the vat, or if you are in the position use 20 foot bays and use steel purlins

How much are the steel purlins?

    1.50 per foot plus vat,
3 bay steel purlin = 60 foot long
    4 bay timber = 63 foot long

means you have one less frame of steel
i used steel purlins and fibre cement this year my purlins were slightly dearer though,

How wide could the bays be if you used steel purlins?
    Thanks in advance severeoversteer.

20ft bays are great and generally work out cheaper than 15ft. Most of the sheds here are 20ft.
The only disadvantage of the 20ft is gates. Doing any dividing with the 20ft involves using 2 10fts or 1 20ft gate which is too long for general livestock work. Also with barriers it involves gettting barriers specially made. 20ft bays are great for machinery sheds as you can easily park 2 machines side by side in one bay, which is much more difficult with 15 ft bays

Yep would agree with that. I put up 2 bay ended up a 3 bay. Went with 15ft. However if i was doing it again I would go with 2 by 20ft. Would be much handier for machinery.

well you can get steel purlins up to 40 foot but thats more common for industrial buildings but never say never, agri purlins tend to be 20 foot bays with a painted finish not galvinised.
type in duggan steel and have a look through their website or newell roofing products

    Just an observation...
how treated is "treated" 6x3 or 7x3 ?
I did a shed 3 years ago. Going to do another smaller one shortly (all being well) , the timber was green all right but didn't look to be half treated. I ended up doing it all again myself and was very glad I did when I saw it up.

ya they arent treated very well alright, they also sag alot over time and end up elongating the holes around screws etc and letting in water, thats why i used steel purlins on my two sheds. when fitting steel purlins you may think they are flimsy but i assure you they are fairly strong

ya seems to be marketed alot anyway but i used tegral fibre cement this year myself on a threebay double slatted shed, very good job, went for tegral as their slates are good whereas svk are relatively unproven over time, also got a good deal from tegral as i have nearly kept them in business over the last few years !

fibrecement is nearly on all sheds in the uk, visit robinsons ssheds scotland website its good ( they love the clearspan sheds )
