Oil to Gas Quote

I got a quote for changing from oil to gas in a small house of 2,200 Euro.

There are 4 rads and a hot water cylinder.

Looks to me that a small boiler is in the region of 600 euro and I just can't see where the other 1600 Euro is going or am I wrong?

    Appreciate your thoughts.

It depends on where your gas boiler is going?? Is it in the same area as your oil boiler? If not then the RGI will have to run new pipes back to your hotpress. He'll also have to run at least 3/4 gas pipe to the new boiler from the meter. Copper is pretty expensive. Is he also doing the electrics for the new boiler?? Is he doing a power flush on your existing system?? He should be.! Then he's to commission the new boiler, balance the system and issue the cert. All these things add up I'm afraid. It's not just as simple as taking out one boiler and popping another in its place.
Ps. Insist on a power flush.
Let me know what his price includes and what's involved as mentioned above.

With such a small system, also have a look at combi boilers, you maybe able to ditch your cylinder and gain some room!

    Thanks for the replies.

The oil boiler is in a small out building. The pipes come up in the living room and the living room radiator is connected at this point.

Then the pipes go into the attic, it's a bungelow and over to the chimney brest where there is a red expansion vessel. From this central point the pipes go down to one bedroom, one bathroom, the kitchen and the hot tank which is situated next to the fire place downstairs.

RGI suggested putting the gas boiler in the attic so pipes from it run maybe 15 feet to where the current pipes are.

Never mentioned a power flush but noted.

I think that mostly describes the place but ask if I have left anything out.

Ask him if the price includes a power flush. Insist on it.
Also what is the distance from the meter to new boiler approx and is the RGI wiring the new boiler and controls or are you getting an electrician

Distance from the meter? Good question as the meter is not yet installed. BG Networks are to visit on Thursday so it an unknown at the moment.

RGI was hoping to be able to run the gas pipe straight up the gable end to the boiler so whats that, ceiling height is 8 feet so it above that, maybe 12 to 15 feet.

I presume RGI was looking after the electrics as he did not ask me to get an electrician.

Ask the RGI if that price includes electrics and power flush. It should for the price he's given. But I stress that I don't know what's involved in the job he's doing so I cannot judge. It may be much more awkward than you or i are imagining

I am not a gas man so cant really advise on the actual price.
A few things you should do
Find out the make and model of the boiler there is a great difference in the price and efficiency of boilers.
Find out what the warranty covers and for how long
the exact amount of work and materials covered by the quote
The insurance cover of the installer

Finally get some more quotes, maybe check with people in your area who have changed already and contact the installer they used if they recommend them
