Light Bulb Failure Indicator - do most cars not have this as standard?

Was driving from Mayo to Cork last night in wind and rain and to pass time my wife and I counted the number of cars coming towards us with only one headlight. We stopped counting when we hit the 80 mark after three hours of driving and I would estimate that it was a 1 in 15 / 20 cars that had only one head light. We counted quite a few in front of us with only one tail or missing brake lights.

Every car I have owned in last 10 years has has a light bulb fault indicator but wondering if this is not a standard feature on all cars as from what I can see we really do have an appalling problem here.

It shouldnt take a dashlight for anyone with an ounce of cop on to realize that they are missing a headlight to be fair. Its just plain stupidity/ignorance for anyone to drive with a headlight missing for more than 24 hours tops.

To answer your question, I dont think the indicator is as common in cars as it should be.

Until cars are pulled over for it nothing will change. It should be a post dated fine where if they present the car with light replaced within 10 days to their local garda station the fine is cancelled.

Do what they do in France, on the spot fines and you are required by law to carry spare bulbs in the car. The age old problem of enforcement would be the issue over here though.
