I broke a bone in my hand playing football last week and I have to wear a cast now for 3 months until it is healed. I am currently on JSA getting 188 a week living at home. I dont want to get off the JSA as its such a long process these days and i could probably get cut as well or end up with nothing while im at it..I have no stamps built up. I am leaveing the country in April and am relying on saving my JSA to pay for a plane ticket. What should I do?what would you do?I was thinking just say nothing and keep claiming,my biggest worry is getting the cast off to sign on the 8th of jan..Its gonna be painful.

You will need to inform the dept that you are unable to work due to injury and claim http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/supplementary_welfare_schemes/supplementary_welfare_allow.html while you are sick/injured

That doesnt state anything about being injured though??..How long does it take to get supplementary allowance and will it be the same amount as I already get? Thanks for your reply.

Why do you need to do anything? You're still available for work, just not certain types of work. Do not take your cast off, whatever you do. Doubt if the SW officer will even remark on it.

Baggy hoodie. Wouldn't say anything. You're still looking for work and available for work. Be different if it was a permanent disability!

Supplementary allowance should come through quiet quickly as you are allready on a means tested payment. You will receive the same amount you get now.

Essentially the Department of Social Protection considers that you are available for employment if you are prepared to accept any offers of suitable employment immediately.from here http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/unemployed_people/jobseekers_allowance.html

Broken hand would limit what work could be undertaken,if the op's GP says no work until hand is healed = not available for work.

Would I have to do another means test before i would get the supplementary allowance? And say when its healed in March would i be put back on JSA immeaditely or have to wait around 4 months like when I first applied for it?

Yes you would be means tested (parents income taken into account). Social welfare will say you are not available for work and you can sign for disability and apply for supplementary welfare allowance as I said will be means tested. Usually can take a week or two. When your cast is off you will have to sign on for job seekers allowance which will take a couple of weeks but you will be paid supplementary welfare allowance as usual if you qualify in the first place.

Dont know if you will get the same amount,I know a lad that broke his leg and he told them,he only got 90 euro a week as they said he should not need as much money because he was injured and living at home. If you can cover it up say nothing. They look for any excuse to cut you these days.
