Advice needed about car losing power

I hope someone can advise on a few nights ago my brother needed a jump start on his car. My husband used his car to help in. The leads were initially attached to the wrong terminals and made a popping noise. Brother then switched terminals and proceeded to jump start car. Yesterday evening my husband drove the car for the first time after the jump start, within a few minutes all the lights started going on the dashboard, lights went out.. Headlights went and it seemed like all the electrics were switching off and the battery was draining. He pulled over immediately. There are no garages open today. We suspect the battery got damaged or something blew when the jumpstart was applied to the wrong terminals. Would anyone know what kind of damage has been done to the car? We are anxious that the electrics have blown and would be v costly to repair ? Anyone don't advice?

Did you check if the battery is securely connected. Might be loose cable or something.

Anytime I had a car jumped I would immediately drive it for 10-15 mins to give the battery a chance to charge before turning the engine off.
You say that the car was driven for the first time since the battery jump. Maybe it needs to be jumped again.

From the OP it's the car that gave the jump that now has the problem, not the one that got it.

I'd say you have done some damage to the donor cars electrical system by reversing the polarity.
You would want to get it checked by someone who knows what they are about with electrics.

My son did the same and blew a relay or diode or something....not good news, but shouldn't be too expensive once the damaged part is found (sounds like a garage job I'm afraid)

Sounds like an expensive problem to be honest OP. modern cars do not like being used to jump start another car. It sounds like one or more of your control modules have been damaged by either the initial reverse Polaris connection or the surge resulting from the jump start operation itself.
If it was a blown fuse then it would be an all or nothing situation. A neighbour of ours had an issue with an ECU blowing when a trailer with shorted out lights was connected up to the car. ECUs don't like surges, shorts or reverse connections. It could also be a blown rectifier set up on the back of the alternator.

It would be worth getting the car to a specialist or auto electrician to do a proper diagnosis.
