Troubleshooting no display

A couple of weeks ago I tried to boot up my laptop but nothing came up on the screen. However, the laptop was getting power and sounded like it was booting. Connected it to an external monitor as well as a TV with HDMI input and still got no picture. Left it for a couple of days and tried it again. This time it worked. But when I shut it down the display hasn't worked since.

I'm assuming this is an issue with either the motherboard or graphics card. However the backlight for the display isn't coming on. Just looking for some advice before I shell out for a new screen. Thanks.

Hold the power button down for around 5 seconds to make sure the laptop is completely off then try powering on again.

I did try that but the laptop powers off immediately when the power button is pressed. I've also pulled the battery and AC.

Funnily enough, a laptop screen I thought was dead revived itself today!

I had a very old laptop that I used for a bit of browsing etc when, one day, the screen stopped working (or so I thought). It's been in the cupboard for many months. Today, on a whim, I took it out and fired it up. It worked but the screen kept going on and off. Then it started wobbling and stuttering. I got a warning that the virtual memory limit had been reached (or something like that). I deleted a load of stuff etc and it seems stable enough at the moment.

Would you have run out of memory for the screen?

My laptop was showing no signs of failing prior to it not working.

It does appear to be a motherboard issue. I pulled the RAM out and powered it up. No beep codes which is what you would expect.
