Usually thats changed with clutch as both tend to go.
Have you noticed the clutch been a bit funny?

are they doing it under warrenty?
you should always fit a new clutch kit when replacing flywheel
its a common problem on audis

What problems did whoever serviced your car notice?
You are driving it all the time and noticed nothing.
Someone who perhaps just drove it a few feet tells you that flywheel needs to be replaced.
Ask him, what makes him think that?
Had he the gearbox off the car?
What way does the clutch feel to you?
Any shuddering/juddering when you are taking off?

money wise i'd say you'll be looking near a grand if not over to get the flywheel and clutch done, what Is the milage on the car?

I've seen plenty of drivers happily driving around with strong clutch shuddering and not even noticing as it has gradually happened over time.
Also, the garage might have just noticed a knocking or something that tells them it's on the way out.
You don't have to do anything if you are happy for the time being and yes it will be expensive.

57k miles - brought in from the north !

They said there was noise coming from it !

I hear nothing, maybe a bit louder at 60 miles per hour !

Your gona end up changen sooner rather then later that is a fact they all go in and around 60k. Personally when I'm doing them I convert them back to a solid flywheel as its cheaper and you won't have the dual mass problem again and I've never had any complaints since. Do u no how to check or what it even feels like when your dual mass flywheel is going. Take the word of your mechanic because your gona change it soon either way.

Diesel? Common problem on VAG cars with dual mass flywheel. Bad design, advantages (barely noticeable reduced vibration) do not outweigh disadvantages (wear) or so I'm told...
First sign is usually light rattle from engine (flywheel hitting of housing) this noise stops at higher revs. Bill is gonna well over €1000 if done by Audi. Heard someone with a golf getting an old fashioned (solid/single mass) flywheel fitted so this doesn't happen again. Like other poster said; normal/good idea to get clutch replaced as well...

There have been reports of problems with solid flywheel kits. These engines have had their harmonics tuned to use a DMF - without one, there have been unwanted side-effects like cam-belts fretting and failing from "crank chatter."

Do the solid kits come with a warranty ?

    Reports reports reports
I've personally fitted plenty of solid flywheels and dual masses with out a single problem afterwards and I know this as the customers cars return to us for services.

And someday of course they come with a years manufacture warranty.

This is a problem for E.U consumers as car warranties from Euro manufacturers are pathetic. VW and Audi offer a pathetic 3 years or 55,000 mile warranty and that is simply unacceptable considering the cost of these cars.

Vag were forced to offer a 10 year warranty or 100,000 miles on the DSG box in the U.S and China because failures are epidemic now.

What do European owners get ? poxy 2 years or 55k miles. Thousands of U.S owners sued VAG, why don't European owners do the same and force car companies to offer decent warranties ?

VAG are completely aware of the problem yet refuse to recall. It's the same with flywheels, though that will be far less common in the U.S where 99% of cars sold will be petrols.

VAG should not be allowed to get away with this.

A damaged reputation is a lot harder to repair !!!
