So, The Brother Luxobarges. Has done so for years. Currently he's in a mint V6 3.0t flappy paddle gearbox Saab 9-5. Car has never given any trouble and is kept like a new pin (the advantages of no kids, see.... ). His idea of 'trouble' with it lately is the blue on the badges fading....... ....

Now though, he needs to do more mileage for work......so what to get ?

Nearly every biggish diesel seems to have some drawback.......so which one doesn't ?

Budget of say..... €5k......must be auto, leather, 2l and over, pref under 2.5l Reliability imperative, pref Indy-maintainable....

He's thinking BMW ....I'm.....struggling to come up with an alternative.

Not with an engine smaller than 2.5 Litres....

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4059339 depends if he can jump from one side of the Swedish fence to the other though.

Also this one in Galway http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4155602, but speeling mistakes and a pic of a 4x4 in the add are enough to put me off.

Or the same thing in a much more usable package - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4231938

Japanese maybe. Lexus GS 300 or earlier models are quite good.

    That or Nissan Maxima.

Or go nuts, Subaru Impreza, Nissan Skyline can be family cars too :pac:

    This.
I'm always the first to suggest something Jap but nothing fits the bill at that price.
A GS460h would be deadly but not a hope at 5 grand.

Was just about to suggest that. Plenty of 530's for sale at the mo.
Or maybe a slightly older 7 series?

An E39 5 series M-Sport with a bit of change left over maybe?

    Agree.
Not to sound like a rabid fanboy but "alternative to BMW" at this price point is a downgrade, for a 5k budget used diesel thats not small or tax concerned, nothing is going to touch a minty spec'ed out last edition e39 530d MSport.

PS: Neither a Saab 9-5 or 5 series BMW (or like anything in this thread) are "luxobarges" GalwayTT!?

It is a luxo-barge but I don't think you'll get a diesel one in budget and the smallest diesel engine is the 3.0tdi apart from the 2.5 tdi but that only came in LHD

2.5L preferably but not strictly, same deal with a 530D M.
You'd get one too, just need a bit of time and a bit of back bone to haggle.

It is but a TDI version (which for RHD markets is 2003+) is not realistically going to be bought for 5k now is it!? And besides, my point was the entire surmise of "my brother drives luxobarges he drives a 9-5" was flawed.

  • Site Banned Posts: 154 ✭✭beaner88

I'd give the 9-5 mentioned a by. Obviously the definition is completely made up by I would say it has to be 9-5, E-class, 5 series size minimum but preferably the a8- 7 series size. The 9-5 gets in for having a big auto engine and luxury spec.

A luxobarge would be a 7 series, s class or A8. But given that a 730d will be well out of budget of 5k, how about something like the below? bit of a compromise on the barge bit, but running costs and purchase price would be far lower...

the alloys, reg and colour dont do it any favours, probably why its so cheap, assuming there is nothing wrong with it...

I doubt the reg has anything to do with pricing unless you have a reason I can't think of?

My boss has nearly the same car. 2004 530d with the horrible 16 inch alloys. It would be worth spending a few quid on some nicer standard 18s.

yeah the interior where you will be spending all the time is lovely, throw on a used pair of mv2's and it would be a big improvement...

I agree about the 18's, but I would probably put 17" on Irish roads...

    this one isnt bad either...

How does a Volvo pass as a "luxobarge"? I mean, to me that term suggests big Mercs, A8's, 7 series.. not a posh Mondeo!

That 04 E270 someone posted previously would do me nicely out of what's been posted so far.. except for the KE reg. If I was buying something like that I'd want the D reg myself :o

S60 is hardly a posh mondeo, completely different place to be

In the end it's still a Volvo though - not one of the marques I'd consider as being a Luxobarge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,718 ✭✭✭Matt Simis

S60 is hardly a posh mondeo, completely different place to be
Its still not a luxo-barge though is it?
The S80 with AWD and 4.4 V8, has a case. Not the S60 (anymore than the Saab or 3/5 series).
    Its a D-Segment, compact exec car. Like a Passat, A4 or 3 series. Luxo-barge!?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-segment

Are we really trying to make the case that any D-Segment car could be a luxo-barge.. talking about Avensis, Mondeo and Insignia here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The Saab 9-5 that the OP's brother is coming from is hardly a luxobarge either is it? It's a glorified MkI Opel Vectra if we want to start picking holes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 656 ✭✭✭bobin fudge

Obvisouly it is subjective but I just assume it to be the top end model of any brand being the biggest

brand doesnt matter either as an opel omega would pass in my eyes as a luxobarge
