How many cores is enough?

I've read a bit about this and I'm looking into getting a new CPU for my old un-namable motherboard. The problem is its a AM2 socket and I don't think it can be updated in the BIOS to an AM2+. I've a phenom quad core 2.2 at the mo and was looking at getting an Athlon 6400+ dual core 3.2. I'm wary about trying to overclock the current cpu in case I ballz up. Any opinions, is it worth changing?

The new one you are thinking of getting is worse than the one currently in the PC.

I would try overclocking, if the motherboard supports it or a complete upgrade. Going to a 'faster' dual core isn't worth your while.

Thats that sorted anyway, no point in downgrading me CPU. A complete upgrade sounds tempting and me birthday is around the corner so its not impossible. Thanks for the help.
