RAM has nothing to do with speed, RAM decides how many things you can do at the same time. If you have enough RAM adding more will make no difference.

Its like if I have to file 100 pages I could do it equally in 1 drawer, having a full cabnet or a room of cabnets will make no difference.

The only time RAM affects speed is when you can't do everything at the same time and they have to be done one after the other.

The frequency of the RAM gererally makes little difference. And the 16GB you mentioned is less than 0.1% slower than the 8GB.

If I only use 4GB and I have 8GB upgrading to 16GB will make no difference at all. If you're doing something like professional photo or video editing it could make a difference then.

The only time you can really talk about faster is when you are comparing processors.

So to answer your question upgrading to 16GB probably wont be any faster at all.

There's a fair chance that it will. I can't say for definate withou't watching what you do though, so only you can answer yourself. You should just do whatever you normally do and try to monitor your RAM usage (I don't know how to do that on a Mac but google might help). If you are using 6GB+ of RAM at any time an upgrade will probably help a small bit, if you are using 7GB+ you should see an improvement and if you are using 8GB or nearly 8GB it should make a good difference.

Whatever you do don't buy Apple RAM (It's a scam). I've seen people that have spent €400 on official approved RAM from Apple, when the same thing can be gotten for €50 from companies with more experience in RAM than Apple like Corsair or Crucial elsewhere.

16gb ram is now considered fairly standard for that kind of work. If the applications you use are for video and graphics are 64bit they can make use of large amounts of ram.
