Just having a look at what came out in 1983 and are thus entitled to cheap tax, not all of these were launched in Ireland in '83, but it's near enough. :)

Very few big engined cars were launched in 1983 though I have an eye out for a nice SEC, they came out in '81 and there's a nice handful of 83 models out there for sale in the UK and Germany.

Start off with this, Car of the Year in 83, we had one, excellent small car, very economical and reliable. Turbo is the one to go for, scary and hard to find in good condition.

Once very common, now very rare, an upmarket Escort

    1985_Ford_Orion_Ghia.jpg

I had one of these, a 1.6 Gti, one of the best hot hatches ever and far more controllable than the 1.9

Some thing for the priests out there.

    Toyota_Corolla_(E80).jpg

    Ditch finder par extraordinairre.

    Another great hot hatch

    crx_0302.jpg

R25, once a big selling managers car.

    renault-25-injection-01.jpg

Great car when they're up and running

    Alfa_Romeo_33_1.3_VL_1991.jpg

Golf Mk II, big seller here.

    stock75a.jpg

R11. As driven by James Bond (or someone who looks a bit like him)

The Maestro, unloved outside of the UK

And finally this, still looks remarkably fresh for a 30 year old design.

Jeez, I feel old now :( i remember all these cars when they came out... Out of the lot, i'd have the R25.... smashing car that was....

the flip side of the coin is that certain models ceased production in '83 to make way for a newer model. So now if you see any mk1 Golf, you know that they're all vintage (or at least, will be by the end of the year). I'm biding my time til 25th Feb til my mk1 reaches its birthday ;)

There must be more examples of this too?

    Their predecessors are roughly............

    Fiat Uno
    Fiat 127
    Pug 205
    104
    Corolla E80
    Corolla E70
    Renault 25
    Renault 20/R30
    Alfa 33
    Alfasud
    Golf Mk II
    Golf Mk I
    Renault 11
    R14
    Maestro
    Allegro
    Micra K10
    Datsun 100/120 (?)

The Orion, CRX and AE86 didn't really have a direct predecessor IMO.

Neighbours of mine had a black one of these back in the day complete with a nightrider style light in the grille, surely the predecessor to the ae86.

Not according to the director of Renault Belgium (where the R25 was made). His comments about the car (his personal company car) leaked, which were not good news :)

Sorry I don't have any internet linky to this, but anyone who does will get my thanks :)

I do however like the looks of the 25 and they are a very comfortable car to drive...

Let's agree to disagree so :D

I've had both a 5 and a 205 and although i loved them and they were great fun to drive, i wouldn't call them good quality cars :D

Peugeot 505 and 405 were both excellent reliable cars, 505 is still very sought after in estate form around Europe.

205 was a very good compact, one of the biggest sellers of the 80's and 90's as was the Citroen AX. Before someone jumps down my throat on this I know loads of example of high mileage AX and C15 (van version) doing the rounds in Germany and France.

No throat jumping here :D But fact is that the 80s french cars were extremely prone to rust... And yes in France, a lot of them survive... Different climate though :D Also, the french are in the habit of servicing their cars, which is a concept that only became popular here when the NCT was introduced in 2000 :-)

Since November 2012 I believe, but only in left hand drive, right hand drive ones didn't appear until 1984 if I remember correctly. Mine hits 30 next year :D

There's a guy in Cork driving a Merc W123 diesel on a 75 plate... and they weren't launched till 76

I dont understand, how is this possible....

...doesn't surprise me.........walk in with a record of manufacture date instead of first reg date, and knowing the way the system works, then it is entirely possible that it's legit. Or a reg document in foreign language.....btdt.... Misunderstood, perhaps, but you will get a legit VLC.

I remember clearing my old Quattro Coupé - they had two listed on the system: one a Coupé Quattro, and the other a.......Quattro Coupé. One had cheaper VRT than the other.........no prizes for guessing which option I took.....;)

....computers are, after all, SISO - **** In, **** Out.... :D:D

I had one 20 years ago, it was Navy Blue with low mileage and not a mark on it, I got it cheap from a lady who's husband had died and she just wanted it out of the way.
Unfortunately It was hit front right by a car coming towards me, the other car took off and was never found. My car was a write off.
Great car, I would buy another one.

I dont understand, how is this possible....

    Do I detect sarcasm there?
I agree, but on the other hand, with the last 2 vehicles I VRT'd I had a choice of the first registration or the date of manufacture as both vehicles had been previously registered outside of the UK, I informed them after they were about to issue the most recent date of first registration that I wanted the date of manufacture, there was no problem.
The first time was the CoCo the second was the NCT centre.

I dont understand, how is this possible....

I've spoken to the guy that owns the car... He told me that it's a pre-production car that, after testing was completed, was sold to one of the engineers in Mercedes who kept it for years and then sold it on.

When was the e30 first sold in Ireland? Wikipedia says it was first produced in 1982, but maybe like the merc above it didnt hit Ireland for a while afterwards? I've never seen an 82 reg e30, but saw a few 83 regs..?

Saab went bust because they are Swedish and they do it their way and still dont understand where they went wrong.

Saab went bust because they are Swedish and did it their way in spite of what their owners GM wanted them to do and still dont understand where they went wrong.

Saab went bust because they wouldnt make Vectras with SAAB badges like GM wanted and GM dont understand that. Opel cant make them so how GM thought SAAB could is staggering ...... but GM are American and they dont understand lots of stuff.
