Used to love these shows as a kid. I remember Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, and Joe 90. A mindmap of my preteens.

    Thanks Gerry and RIP.

Great bloke, Space 1999 was my favourite show growing up, even over Star Trek which I also loved.

My favourite programme as a child was Thunderbirds, as seen on a Saturday morning in 1972/3

A great enthusiast for what he did right to the end. I hope he is buried in a Thunderbird 2 pod.

Those radioactive monsters in Space 1999 scared the crap out of me as a kid:

That's a real shame. Thunderbirds is a very fond childhood memory. I don't think it would be made now. RIP.

If new versions of Thunderbirds, Stingray or Captain Scarlet were ever made, then you can be sure that they would be made in boring old CGI and not Supermarionation.

    RIP Gerry.

Space 1999 for me. I remember one in particular that had a giant spider type alien that used to suck people into its mouth and spit out the remains. Spooked the hell out of me as a young lad.

Its Dragons Domain you're thinking of: (Put your hands over your eyes!:

What do you make of this? "A complete re imagining" apparently, if it goes down the Battlestar reboot road it could be great (though unlikely to be as good, new Battlestar is one of the best TV dramas ever in any genre):

Gutted at the amount of obituaries not mentioning Space 1999..

I umm.. as a young kid, 'had an accident in bed' after, for some strange reason, the Dragon's Domain \ Space 1999 episode was shown before Saturday Sport on LWT. Space 1999 enjoyed a slot at about 11am, as far as I can recall.

    Absolutely terrified for weeks.

    RIP Gerry.

Everything should be filmed in Supermarionation, it always looks brilliant.

I always remember Stingray on a Sunday Morning on (I think) HTV.

Yeah I remember Dragons Domain when I was a kid, scared the bejeezus out of me!

Got the first season of Space 1999 on glorious bluray there recently, the episodes still look fantastic. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson really had a great sense of design and some of the best physical effects people in the industry, none of that CGI cobblers.

From Stingray through Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, UFO and Space 1999 he came up with fantastic shows that could be enjoyed by both kids and adults. Even the weirder stuff like Joe 90 and The Secret Service was watchable and interesting.

I would love to see a few episodes of FIREBALL XL5 again.

People tend to overlook his one and only proper big screen production "Doppelgänger" 1969.

Actually quite entertaining, I could never hack any of his puppet stuff as a kid though, always thought it looked creaky and cheap even then, as I said above though I loved 1999.

These fecking things used to scare the living daylights out of me, when I was probably old enough not to be scared!

RIP Gerry Anderson, a man full of great ideas and brilliant characters. (Apart from the scary lads in Terrahawks!)

Driven to his final resting place by Noel Gallagher dressed as Parker :D

Just watched "Black Sun" from Space 1999 last night, definitely it's finest hour, the scene with Koenig and Bergman is really well acted and scripted and quite moving.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned that Mr. Anderson was involved in the first series of the best ever Torchy, Torchy the Battery Boy. Santy brought me the DVD last month. Brilliant stuff, and it has a classic theme tune. But, as I mentioned on another post, viewer discretion is advised.
