In a boozer here and have a drunken cork man who hates dubliners screaming at me telling me Cork is the real capital. He asked us all why Dublin is capital and what qualities it possesses to be a decent capital. Forgetting about the presidents house and that..... Is Dublin a good capital city?

A capital needs to have air and sea links to every major trading partner. It also needs a solid transport infrastructure, motorways linking it to even major city, most governmental and civil service offices and a reasonable population (>10% of the country's population). Essentially, it needs a central location.

Cork is too far south, fewer motorway links, not enough population, few government buildings, a poorer infrastructure and doesn't have nearly as many air and sea links as Dublin.

Cork would be a very poor choice for a capital.

I never could figure out where Cork people came up with that "real capital" stuff. Dublin is over 5 times the size of Cork population wise.

Some Cork people sure love playing the victim card.

Just off the top of my head...

    * Main port for people by boats to go to England and Europe.
    * Main airport for people by air to go to England and Europe.
    * Main shipping ports for goods (in and out) for the rest of Ireland.
    * Main conjunction point of many industries (in Dublin and outside it) in Ireland, from everything high-tech down to manufacturing businesses.
    * Main city that has within its limits, a greater number of third level education colleges and resources?
    * Main city that still has the most government departments which run the country?
    * Main city that from the foundation of the state, is the world focal point for attention in relevance to the rest of the state and in actual contribution to the founding of the Irish constitution and its effect on the state as it (its laws made there) reaches outwards across the country.
    * Main city of many of our national charities and now of our most specialised and national hospitals?
    * Highest population per area?
    * Highest public consumer condensed zone in regards to homes/people per area?
    * Highest condensed commercial zone in regard to number of shops per square mile?

I'm sure there is loads of others...

    Cork should be the Capital?
Buy the man another drink - sounds like he needs it!

Everyone knows that "Town" is the real capital. Dublin and Cork can both stfu, so they can.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,061 ✭✭✭keith16

Typical Cork nonsense. I bet he also has one of those stupid "peoples republic of cork" t-shirts with the star on it. Are they a communist or republican county?

And if they deem Cork as it's own state, why do they even care what the capital of Ireland is?

Sounds like Rotterdam and that place is a crap hole

In fairness every time someone asks me where to go when visiting Ireland i say "anywhere but Dublin"

Belfast would be a better capital than Cork when you think about it.

Logically if you were to find an Irish city to replace Dublin as the capital, Cork would be down the list of locations.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,562 ✭✭✭✭Sunnyisland

As Waterford is the oldest city why was that not the capitol city, It has/had ports etc etc

Cork people are the Scousers of Ireland. Stupid annoying accent. Sports teams that have seen better days. Always moaning and feeling sorry for themselves with an over inflated sense of the greatness of their rather mediocre city. A laughing stock to the rest of us.

I'd pay to watch a Dubbelinner and a Corkonian having a shouting match, one would sound like he's got a mouthful of marbles and the other's had a few shots of helium.

Anyway obviously Galway is the only place worthy of being the capital, the main reason being no silly accents.

Galway doesn't need to be capital, it's already the hipster capital of Ireland which in itself makes it annoying. Have never been to a place with as many knobs in all my life.

    Dublin should obviously be capital.

It can ever be a my city is better than your town, or my town is better than your city. Cork is a glorified town and Galway is a glorified village.

I'm having a pint of the black stuff in Dublin at the moment. I'm not from here. Whatever about being a good capital, Dublin is a town I enjoy more the more I come here. Some craic to be had in fairness.
