Hey, just wondering out of curiosity, would car doors/locks open if the battery went flat over night?
Or would it pretty much be stuck and you would have to smash glass or so?

    They should open fine.

I've not had a problem getting mine open in the past even with a flat battery

Does you car have a key and a keyhole in the door ?

I use only key for door opening always, but like it opens all doors at same time, I imagine some kind of electronics is involved and not just mechanical system.
Flat battery = no electronics = no door opening?

If you mean remote central locking that has a battery in the key which remotely opens and closes the locks on the door iirc?

Has that problem with my wife when dating, she asked me to replace the battery as it was fubar. When going to unlock the car she had a serious wtf moment when the car wouldn't unlock via remote keyfob. Wtf happens now she said?? I used the key to open the door.......

Some may not have a keyhole on drivers side but there should be one on the passengers side covered by a wee plastic cap.

Yep, and some cars that have the battery in the boot have a keyhole on the bootlid (or hidden over the number plate like on my old car)

this is very dependant on the car some deadlocks will not open with no power in the car, so if the car was locked while the battery had charge and then you tried to open with the battery dead it wouldn't unlock the car. Its not really a big deal its usually not difficult to introduce enough 12v for the lock system to work

I remember a guy I used to work with had a BMW e34, had to jack the car up and hook up some terminal under the floor to unlock it with the battery dead

Have the same and has happened to me in the past. You can actually open the passenger door with the car key and a set of pliers to hold on to the keys and twist them, door then comes up- is an actual feature on them incase the battery dies.

before I was told this I was staring at the car for a long time puzzled :pac:

If battery is flat, instead of key opening all doors together, it will only open the door the key is used in as your mechanical action will open that.

One thing to remember is it your car has an alarm it may go off when fitting a new battery and boy is it loud when your head is under the bonnet.

Just the drivers door will open on my car using the key when the battery is dead. The battery is under the drivers floor which is a bit of a pain in t'arse but that's another story.

And the doors may lock on connection of a new battery or jump leads, so make sure key doesnt get locked in car.
