    normal the nights before.

Would anyone here be able to tell me what the problem is, if it's serious and, most importantly, is it going to be an expensive job to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help at all,

It would seem that a motorised valve has not opened for the heat coil on the tank. Try google an image of a motorised valve.
That is a small box type item with a wire coming out fo it somewhere in the area of the hot water tank.
It will be on the pipe work going in to the side of the tank, and one side of it wil be warmer than the other,
There is a lever on the size of it which you can manually open to allow the water to flow through,
Should only be a case of replacing the electrial part of the valve, and will save draining the system, as always the timing could be better though....

yeah just leave the motorised valve open manually then replace it in a few months or when it suits. the boiler will turn itself off when the water in your cylinder is suffice anyway so dont worry about that. those valves are always giving hassle. hope you can sort it out

If the valve is wired with the aux contacts used and you leave it opened manually the boiler will switch on and not switch off till the valve is closed. To test the valve turn the heating on open valve manually and see if cylinder is heating if it heats just remove valve head and open base heating will work normally.Just post pic of hot press here and it can be checked and someone will talk you through process

You are all great. I didn't think there would be anyone even on when Santy is imminent :D

However, i'm not going to attempt it myself - a relative says he understood it when i rang him and read this thread out to him so he will look at it when he drops up but I could be back on seeking advice!!!

You took a great weight off me as i envisioned a HUGE bill and i couldn't cover it now. Also, was very afraid it might mean heating would go.

    Have a lovely Xmas,
    Thanks a million,
    Rose
