    Hi,
I am interested in getting a Department of Education recognised qualification in Resource. I recently came across the Postgraduate Diploma in SEN in Froebel.Does anyone know if this is qualification is recognised by the Department? Would you be a qualified Resource teacher on completion of this course? Thanks

I am not sure if its the same course but there is a cert/diploma course running between St Pats/ICEP and DCU....its a one year cert, 2 year diploma course for both primary and secondary teachers....Its entirely online with assignments to be submitted for the cert and a dissertation for the diploma. Its recognised by the dept but your not actually qualified as a resource teacher at the end as there is no actual teaching practice element...I think if you go onto the masters in SEN it is recognised as an SEN qualification...UCC run a course which recognises you and does have a teaching practice element.

As most people dont have any SEN qualification though Id say either course would help you get a leg in the door of a school...I know a few people who did the St Pats course with this in mind and all have subsequently got jobs

You need to be a qualified primary school teacher to work as a resource teacher in a primary school. The degree won't qualify you to teach resource as those studying the course will already be qualified to teach resource, if that's what you mean?

Thanks so much for all that information, I appreciate it. It's very confusing that all these courses are on offer, but you're not actually qualified as a Resource teacher at the end of it. I've been working as in resource in secondary for the past 5 years and financially I don't know if it's worth my while investing in a course if it's not recognised by the Department.
