hi everybody.im upgrading the ram on my pc.specs are intel i3 540 processor,2 2gig sticks of ddr3 ram and an asus P7H55-M PRO motherboard which can hold 16 gig of ram.i have put the 2 new sets of 4 gig sticks in no 1 slot and no 3 slot and system is running fine and shown the 8 gig of ram installed ok.my question is?can i put the other 2 2gig sticks of ram which i took out and put them into slot 2 and slot 4 to give me 12 gig of ram or would it unbalance things.both sets of rams are ddr3 16000.im running windows 7 64 bit aswell.thanks in advance.

Putting 2x4gb in will be fine, there are 2 separate memory channels(1,3 and 2,4). You only really need to match memory that's on the same channel

tried putting the 2 2gig sticks of ram into channel 2 and 4 with channel 1 and 3 holding the 2 4gig sticks of ram and the computer wont start up and i just get a black screen.when i take out the 2 2 gig sticks everything is fine.any ideas?

    Are they all 1.5v sticks?

the 2 gig sticks are 1.65 v and the new 4 gig sticks are 1.5 v.does this cause a problem?and is there anyway to add the 2 gig sticks?

Things get more complicated with mixed voltage and timing. All the ram will have to run at 1.5 unless you want to risk overvolting.
You would have to manually select a speed and latency that all memory would run stable on 1.5v.
What's the timing on the 2 kits?

the timing is 9-9-9-24.hope thats the number you are looking for.how do you manually select it and is it more hassle than its worth.should i just leave out the ram.sorry for all the questions, built the pc myself but would not be too much up on the very technical end of things.

It can be changed in the bios from auto detect to manual select. It's not worth the hassle as you would probably have to run all the ram at a slower speed to get it to work.
