Let me guess - you're from Kerry and one of your folks was born in Galway (or you picked Galway rather than a Dub or Corkman??) :D:D

Michael Donnelan? Good but not for that list imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 372 ✭✭platypus

    Football
    1. John O'Leary
2 Robbie O'Malley (if its the meath corner back from 87/88, if not then Lacey)
3 John O'Keefe (dont remember any of them)
    4 Marc O'Se
    5 Tomas O'Se
    6 Kieran McGeeney
    7 Seamus Moynihan
    8 Dara O'Se
    9 Anthony Tohill
    10 Trevor Giles
    11 Larry Tompkins
    12 Pat Spillane
    13 Colm O'Rourke
    14 Padraig Joyce
    15 Colm Cooper

    Hurling
    1 Damien Fitzhenry
    2 Brian Corcoran
    3 Brian Lohan
    4 Ollie Canning
    5 Brian Whelehan
    6 Seanie McMahon
    7 J.J. Delaney
    8 Colin Lynch
    9 John Fenton
    10 D.J. Carey
    11 Henry Shefflin
    12 Joe Dooley
    13 Eoin Kelly
    14 Nicky English
    15 Jamesie O'Connor

I only really remember last 25 years. Some strange positioning of some players, some of it seems to be avoiding clashes between players of same counties, but looks a bit off

I obviously cant compare them with players I havent really seen, but Im surprised by the exclusions of Ciaran Carey, Ken McGrath, Martin Storey and Joe Cooney in the hurling. Similarly for football no Stephen O'Brien, Mickey Linden, Sean Cavanagh, Declan O'Sullivan or Martin McHugh. Some of the inclusions seem strange too

Who I'd pick (haven't seen all of these players, seen some of them only on recordings of big matches, so I might be biased leaning towards more modern players):

    FOOTBALL
    1. Johnny Geraghty (Galway)
    2. Enda Colleran (Galway)
    3. John O'Keefe (Kerry)
    4. Marc O'Se (Kerry)
    5. Sean Óg De Paor (Galway)
    6. Kieran McGeeney (Armagh)
    7. Seamus Moynihan (Kerry)
    8. Dermot EarlEy (Roscommon)
    9. Jack O'Shea (Kerry)
    10. Maurice Fitzgerald (Kerry)
    11. Mattie McDonagh (Galway)
    12. Pat Spillane (Kerry)
    13. Mikey sheehy (Kerry)
    14. Matt Connor (Offaly)
    15. Colm Cooper (Kerry)

    HURLING
    1. Davy Fitzgerald (Clare)
    2. John Doyle (Tipperary)
    3. Pat Hartigan (Limerick)
    4. Ollie Canning (Galway)
    5. Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny) (very unfair to choose between Walsh and Whelehan)
    6. Seanie McMahon (Clare)
    7. JJ Delaney (Kilkenny)
    8. John Fenton (Cork)
    9. Colin Lynch (clare)
    10. DJ Carey (Kilkenny)
    11. Henry Shefflin (Kilkenny)
    12. Eddie Keher (Kilkenny)
    13. John Mullane (Waterford)
    14. Nicky English (Tipperary)
    15. Eamonn Cregan (Limerick)

I'd have given Ciaran Carey a nomination somewhere, personally.

as a Corkman watching only the last 20 yrs or so the one that jumps out to me is no place for Sean Og.

2 nominees in the football is about right, our record is poor at senior but I thought the 87-90 team would have got more than Larry. Cahalane or Teddy Mc maybe?

but like I said, thats only from watching the last 20 yrs

No room in the hurling nominations for Brendan Cummins or Noel Hickey...... wtf!

    1 Billy Morgan (Cork)
    2 Enda Colleran (Galway)
    3 Jack Quinn (Meath)
    4 Marc O'Se (Kerry)
5 Sean Og De Paor (Galway)
    6 Tim Kennelly (Kerry)
    7 Martin O'Connell (Meath)
Midfield Anthony Tohill (Derry), Jack O'Shea (Kerry)
    10 Trevor Giles (Meath)
    11 Greg Blaney (Down)
    12 Pat Spillane (Kerry)
    13 Mickey sheehy (Kerry)
    14 Matt Connor (Offaly)
    15 Bernard flynn (Meath)

Purely from the selection although there are numerous people not nominated I would place ahead of my final selection. No Glen Ryan , no Paddy Cullen, no Mickey Linden, no John McDermot, (I never remember Trevor Giles playing at number 10 even once).

Pretty sure Giles played at 10 in 96. Good shouts for Ryan and McDermott

No Stephen Cluxton is a joke.No Paul Flynn,no Johnny Dooley (who should be there ahead of Joe) .Jarlath Fallon is nominated as a corner forward despite being a half forward for his career.

Not a huge hurling man myself but I though Cummins has been one of the top keepers for a good few years

lot of positioning of the nominees seems to be off ie Ja Fallon at 13, Marc O Se 4, De Paor 5, Brian Corcoran 2, Ben O Connor 12 etc. Maybe im wrong but Fallon played 11 for the main, Marc O Se plays right of defence either 2 or 5, De Poar no 7 always, Brian Corcoran no 6 or 14 later in his career and O Connor played right of attack at 10 or 13 never on left. How can you really pick say Corcoran at 2 or De Paor at 5 in positions they didnt play in???

    Dermot Flanagan. FFS.

    No Cluxton. FFS.

Am I the only one surprised at the non inclusion of Ciaran McDonald? He may not make the starting 15 but I think a lot in Mayo feel he's the best they've ever seen come out if the county.

Him and Declan O'sullivan could both have been in contention.
seeing as the Indo were picking players from the last 50 years It may have been a better idea to nominate 5 players for each position i.e one per decade.

I have just realised that Sean Cavanagh wasnt nominated and he should have been , he is probably best all round footballer of the last decade in my opinion

Michael Coleman was a better midfielder than Steve Mahon, and Colin Lynch too.

It was at no. 4 he played though not no. 2 where he has been nominated.

Difficult as I'm not on the planet 50 years

Brendan Cummins out and Noel (I've got a frying pan for a hurley) skehan in is a bit of a joke. Likewise Johhny Pilkington is one of the 8 best midfielders of the last half a century ?? He was decent but no more than that. Why him instead of Iggy Clarke?

Re the Waterford hurlers mentioned, their failure to deliver on the big day holds them back

The nominees are from the Indo supplement that they released earlier in the year when a XV was selected from each county. They recently then picked a XV from each province out of those county teams. That's why there are so many notable omissions.

Any chance you might have a link to the lists for the best county teams? I'd like to see that

It was at no. 4 he played though not no. 2 where he has been nominated.

As a corner back he always played at number2, may have moved over the odd time to pick someone up, I can't rightly remember but he always wore 2. His performances as a 19 year old in 1992 were the best corner back displays I can remember seeing, he was awesome as a corner back and would have been the best ever in that position if he stayed there. Fact was he was too good to be in there when teams wouldn't put a ball near him, even at centre back they tried to bypass him most of the time. For the purposes of that poll corner back is probably best for him,

Pilkington was a more skillfull and better hurler than Colin Lynch who is on that 50, plus Noel Skehan was a legend in the game, i take it you only are watching hurling in the last 10 years, Iggy Clarke was a left half back on the galway team of the early 80's

no, I've been watching it for the last 35 years actually. I'm sorry but I could never take Noel Skehan seriously, his hurley was something like a child would draw. Fair comment on Iggy Clarke but didn't he win at least 1 all star in the midfield. ? I seem to recall Pilkington hurling in the half forwards as well.

Seanie O'Leary is another who could have been considered, 14 years hurling senior for Cork and nearly a goal a game, his goal against Offaley in the 84 final showed a lovely touch. I think he is forgotton about because he just didn't look athletic enough, but he was well able to poach goals

pilkington played in the half foward line in 2000 near the end of his time in an offaly jersey, he gave Sean og Halpin a lesson in hurling in that years semil final got 0-4 points from play off him and that was pilkington coming to the end of his time, also hurl some great games for his club Birr over the years.

its hard to pick 50 as there will always be some player left out was jamsie o'connor and Martin Quigley and better forwards than Johnny Dooley or John Troy Liam Fennelly or Billy Fitz think not.

Pilkington might have been the better hurler but Lynch was by far a better midfielder, he could run from 21 to 21 all day.

Jerry O'Connor was a better hurler than Pilkington and a better Midfielder than Lynch, neither of them has any business being on that list, speaking as a Corkman I don't think Fenton deserves to be either, my childhood hero Tom Cashman shouldn't be there as a midfielder either, it's a strange selection in midfield.

Jerry o'Connor would have been a fitter player than Pilkington but wasn't as
    skillfull as him

I think that shows why things like this can't be done really but are great discussion points, personally I would have Lynch on the team as he is the best midfielder I've seen but I would be extremely biased in my opinion :)

You should know that Ken McGrath is a messiah in Waterford and any criticism of him will not be tolerated by natives of said county, I don't get it myself, if there was a B-list I'm not sure I'd have him on it

Darren Fay suffers from being successor to Quinn Lyons legacy His one championship battle with Ian Robertson was a great duel Robertson was outfront for all the early ball in He kept getting the full weight of a diving to punch Fay Borderline not a foul and hard to take physically and mentally They ended up in a who can move who shoving match Neither budged I think Fay was still agile enough to mark any style of full forward When Joyce bested him Galways were dominant and not a bad blot on yer copybook anyways

typical boards and Irish reaction for people to just whinge, moan and complain about who is not there, rather than focusing on the list itself.

everybody cant be fitted in, this is 50 years we are talking about and with only one or two exceptions, the list is spot on IMO. here is my football team anyway.

    1 John O'Leary (Dublin)
    2 Paidi O'Se (Kerry)
    3 John O'Keefe (Kerry)
    4 Marc O'Se (Kerry)
    5 Tomas O'Se (Kerry)
    6 Kieran McGeeney (Armagh)
    7 Seamus Moynihan (Kerry)
    Midfield Brian Mullins (Dublin)
    Midfield Darragh O'Se( Kerry)
    10 Brian Dooher (Tyrone)
    11 Larry Tompkins (Cork)
    12 Pat Spillane (Kerry)
    13 Mickey sheehy (Kerry)
    14 Matt Connor (Offaly)
    15 Colm Cooper (Kerry)

And they say the Kerryman jokes are no more, that's the best one i've seen in years, the guys who aren't from Kerry all forged their reputations against them, have you watched matches where Kerry weren't playing.

I agree with your first point though about the whinging.
