Satellite Signal lost on 42E

    Hi Folks,

we got a satellite and box set up for us on 42E Turksat. A while ago, some of the channels changed frequency and we lost them. When we tried to rescan to find them, the box froze mid-scan. When we rebooted and switched it back on it seems to have reverted to all the factory settings and now won't pick up the satellite.

We have lost the number for the guy who installed it for us (he was a lovely Romanian guy, but can't for the life of me find his number).

Can anyone advise how a technophobe can re-set the settings so that it picks up the dish? is it just that the dish needs to be readjusted? or is it more complicated.

at a loss how to fix this - other than scanning for new channels I don't know much about how this all works, so satellites for dummies level answers please! Explain it to me like I'm a 5 year old! Or recommend someone who can do it for us at a reasonable price?

The receiver is an opticom 4100c, and we are based in Nth Co Dublin if that helps.

    thanks folks!

Have you got the manual, its an opticum(com) 4100c receiver? You could do a new installation yourself but we need a bit more information. Is it just one lnb on dish and dish is pointed at 42east all the time?

Basicallly what you have to do is select 42east and re-scan but beofre you do that post back and double check the lead at back of box has not come loose, this is a screw on connector that should be marked lnb in on box.

Dish is permanently directed at 42E and connection at back is firmly screwed in place. Have tried doing a scan but they all fail

Are you selecting the satellite first at 42east and then doing a compete scan. Look at page 12 of the manual, go and select the 42east and the signal meter should show if you have a signal, if not dish has moved or cable at dish end has moved. Did you unplug box from wall and then power back on, a re boot can fix some problems as well. Try tv trade ie for an installer.

May i ask why you employed a lovely Romanian guy (your words)and not an Irish guy?

Could you tell me which channels are the one who you are talking about from Turksat@42E or they are all gone now ?

The manual is about as much use as a chocolate tea-pot to be honest! When we get home tonight we are going to switch off, unplug everything, re-boot and see how it goes. After that, a bit of a manouvere on the dish itself and failing all of that if it still doesn't work I think I'll just throw the damn thing out the window!

may I ask why its any of your business who I paid to do work? what exactly is it you are getting at with your post??
The only reason I even mentioned where the guy is from is because I was put in contact with him via this site, so was hoping someone might know how to contact him, or that he might still use this site.
Where someone is from makes not one iota of difference to me - I will employ a tradesperson based upon recommendations and skills.

Relax.Iam just a poor Irish self-employed tradesman, that cant claim a cent in state benefit.
Iam curious why people pay non-nationals with just a mobile number to do work and are then puzzled when it all goes wrong, and the guy can no longer be found.
I am using a large dish (1.2m) with three lnb's and it was installed about five years ago by Zintek in Tallaght. The signal is still just as strong now.

Sorry but I don't see any reason to relax - the fact you are irish or not means nothing to me, adn the fact you chose not to pay anything higher than S class PRSI is your own choice so how or why you can claim benefits is not relevant. And the guy who installed it did a great job - had no issues for 2 years. Its only because some of the channels changed and the receiver froze when we were trying to rescan that the problem occurred. Nothing whatsoever to do with the guy who installed it. The only reason I can't find him now is through my own fault as I can't find the card he gave me (I put it somewhere safe...so safe I can't remember where it is!).

oh dear oh dear oh dear. Not the kind of post id expect here in the satellite forum, but perhaps belongs in after hours.

There is a reason why i ask you that, the channels who moved may be changed on diferent spot and have no coverage in Ireland if you tell me i can check them on my dish and can even help you ...

I also may know that romanian man,can you remember his name ?

Manc-Red who asked you,and what has your stupid comment got to do with anything.
My point was he got a cheap non national, now its not working and he is trying to fix the system.
If a shop (like Zintek which i used) or Tony from satelitte.ie who posts here almost daily and is very helpfull, they might be a easier to find.
The work he paid for only lasted two years. That is not a good deal.

you need to get off your soap box. The op said he was more than happy with the work carried out at the start. Problems arise from time to time, the op had lost the installers number, doesn't mean the installer is a bad egg. To be honest, in this day of age, no need for people to come here slagging off non Irish people. We voted ourselves knee deep into Europe, we have to live with our decisions.
While im on the subject now, I know a lot of Irish installers would run a mile when a non 28east install is mentioned. Irish installers for fact find it hard to put up a dish for 13 east say. Now that's not everybody I know, but locally here in the west its a fact.

Just wondering op, have you tried a different box, any fta receiver would do that can blind scan. That will tell you if the box is at fault or your dish has moved off alignment.

Also 42east is very low towards horizon, has a tree grown or structure been put up recently that could affect line of sight?

Thanks to all of you who have provided useful suggestions - we haven't had an opportunity to reboot and have a fiddle around with the cable etc yet, but we definitely will this weekend.

As for 20/20...well I won't even justify his nonsense with a response.

This is my last comment here, and i fail to see what your problem is SNAPS.
The poster had started a thread before looking for someone to provide and install a dish for Turkish TV for a Christmas present.
The thread got eight replies. Two of these were from a Moderator telling her to try the Established companies in the goldenpages and posting the link.
All iam curious about is why she didnt take the Mods advice, So my question was phrased differently.
What was the point in starting a thread if your not going to take the advice.
Iam not going to comment again,as i feel Little Ted got what she paid for.

    thanks folks!

If I could have found an up-to-date channel list I would have linked to it.

Follow these instructions for the Globo/Opticum 4100c, EXCEPT the part where you see Astra 28.2. That should be replaced with Turksat 42.0E which is the sat you are looking for. (you may have to scroll down a list to pick that instead). Then continue with the instructions.

FYI the "established" companies were contacted. One of them wouldn't install on the 42E, the second wanted crazy money (over €500 IIRC) and the other one wouldn't come to where I live. The final one I contacted couldn't come for almost a month. I then got a recommendation from a fellow boardsie via PM. Contacted the chap, he quoted me a very reasonable price and for that price I took a punt. He was a very polite and decent fellow, did a good clean job and I didn't feel uncomfortable having him in my home. The quality of his work was never in question. The issue is purely 'one of those things'. The channel most watched changed location. We tried to re-scan, but mid way through the scan the box froze. We were going to sort it out sooner, but then with various other things, the box just got switched off and left for 6 mths before we went back and decided to try to fix it. (Incidentally, several people in Turkey also had the same problem when the channel moved - but that is probably cos they got non-Turkish people to install the dish for them, eh? )

Truth be told if we had a better box this prob wouldn't have happened, and the installer did advise us on more pricey but better box options, but for our needs the cheap one was sufficient - in fairness for €150 we got a box and dish, supplied and fitted, and 2 years out of the install without problems. So yes we did get what we paid for - and more, and none of the issues were the fault of the installer. If there had been an issue why in gods name would I be asking if anyone knows his contact number???? duh

I really don't see what your problem is? you are being blatantly discriminatory IMO.

Now I am annoyed with myself because I contradicted myself as I said I wouldn't even justify your nonsense, and now I have. And I know I shouldn't even bother as people like you will only hear what you want to.

To everyone else - many thanks. We'll give your suggestions a go over the weekend and I'll report back on how it went. Ta.

please tell me the name of the channel that went AWOL and the frequency?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,332 ✭✭✭tatli_lokma

oh I'll have to check with the other half - I think it was star? but I could be wrong. I'll check

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,678 ✭✭✭swoofer

ah that explains it, star moved to an east beam back sometime last year and it cannot be received here in ireland or uk for that matter.

this is the beam for that satellite

    http://www.turksat.com.tr/images/stories/turksat3a/t3a_turkiye.jpg

AND the good news is you can still watch star tv online go here

    http://www.startv.com.tr/

so dont bother trying to get 11054h frequency you cant and I have tried as well.

    happy new year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,332 ✭✭✭tatli_lokma

thanks for that - yeah we have just been connecting the laptop to the TV and watching star that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,332 ✭✭✭tatli_lokma

just an update - we tried the suggestions given here but with no success.

We were recommended a guy not too far from us who could come and have a look. He came, had a look, turns out that part of the dish was damaged - the bit that sticks out, the little plastic yokey on the end of it (can't remember what he called it). Well anyway, he fixed it, got it all working and even managed to get more channels than we had. €50, and money well spent.

Oh and he was a foreigner! Gasp horror! so of course we will be expecting the work to be substandard and not to last ;)
