Avensis issue

Hello, I've got a slight problem (hopefully) with my car. It's a 2004 1.6 Avensis. It's got just over 90,000 miles on it. It started up fine today and as I was driving slowly up a narrow road the engine stopped. The engine light came on and it took a while for it to start again. The engine light went off as soon as it started. I carried on and the car seemed fine, no weird noises/smoke etc to indicate a problem. The engine light comes on when I turn the key but goes off if I start the car. It seems to be running fine.
Any ideas as to whats wrong? I won't be able to get to a mechanic until after the new year due to the hours I'm working and luckily I have alternate transport but hopefully this won't be an expensive problem!

Sounds like it just cut out?

Yes, but the engine light has never come on in the time I've owned it. Thats what has me worried. Thanks.

Does the check engine light not come on every time you turn the key to the first position?

Yes but it usually doesn't stay on. I think it goes off after a few seconds. Starting to feel like a fuss over nothing :o

The Check Engine light will stay on until you start the car. So yours appears to be working perfectly.

It's curious as to why it cut out. Were you labouring it? Did the engine just stall?

In any case, you can just keep driving it (in my opinion) if it's running as normally as you say. You could get it hooked up to a diagnostics machine and see if theres a fault code stored from when it cut out.

    They're your choices really.

Diagnostics is probably the best advice here,i have the exact same car with the mil on but in my case its a sensor.
