Sending an item by courier?

This may be a silly question but i actually don't know the answer. Can an ordinary person send an item by courier on a once off basis?

Or is it only larger shops, clients with accounts etc that can do this.

The reason i ask is that i'm thinking of selling a bulky item on eBay. Sending with An Post would not be an option as the size & weight will kill me and it would cost as much as the item is worth i'd say.

So i'm wondering if the courier option is open to me?

I've used DHL plenty of times and have not had a bad experience to date.

Great. I presume they are much cheaper than An Post?

also is courier a better option if sending to the UK?

I found them much more reliable, and it has to be signed for so theres that added security.

I just used Post Plus to have a parcel picked up in Antrim and couriered to me in Dublin. Was able to organise it all online through their website. Very easy.
